Montgomery County Police Officers from the 3rd District Special Assignment Team (SAT) arrested three suspects who appeared to be targeting Hispanic victims to rob.

On October 3, 2007, at approximately 10:15 p.m., 3rd District SAT officers were deployed to the Piney Branch corridor of Silver Spring. Three men were observed on the corner of Piney Branch Road and Flower Avenue whose activities and behavior appeared suspicious to the officers.

The first suspicious incident involved the suspects approaching an adult Hispanic man. That man became confrontational with the suspects, and they walked away. A second incident involved a 21-year-old Hispanic male victim who was non-aggressively approached by the suspects. After the victim was seen giving the suspects something from his pocket, they walked on. A third incident involved a 37-year-old Hispanic man sitting on a bench who was aggressively accosted by the suspects. This victim ran from the suspects but was stopped by them, and personal property was taken from him. The officers rapidly moved in and took all three suspects into custody. The suspect, later identified as Deiby Iona, was armed with a knife.

The officers believe these Hispanic victims were targeted because the suspects did not think they would report criminal acts to police. Montgomery County Police want to once again remind our Hispanic community members that the immigration status of crime victims will not be questioned; and reported criminal incidents are thoroughly investigated.

Diontae Maurice Gibson, age 20, of the 8600 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring was charged with robbery and is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on $50,000 bond. Deiby Miguel Iona, age 20, of the 1900 block of East West Highway in Silver Spring, was charged with armed robbery, and is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond. Malachi Leejay Jackson, age 19, of the 8600 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring was charged with robbery and is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
