KNIGHTED AS CHAMPIONS … Coach Kelly Wakeman amused everyone on Jan. 24 as the Montgomery College women’s soccer team was honored by the Montgomery County Council for winning the school’s first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association women’s soccer championship. The Knights finished 17-3 in 2011, earning Coach Wakeman honors as national coach of the year. In the season before she became coach, the Knights won only one game. In the last five seasons, they are a combined 62-12-1. In recalling some of the lighter moments on the path to becoming national champions, Coach Wakeman drew laughs from her players and Councilmembers (in front, left to right) Craig Rice, Phil Andrews and Valerie Ervin.
