MONTGOMERY’S HISTORICALLY BLACK COMMUNITIES … About 40 communities in Montgomery County that were settled by freed slaves in the 19th century were recognized on Feb. 28 by the Montgomery County Council as part of the County’s celebration of National Black History Month. Individuals who trace their family’s heritages to the Lyttonsville, Sandy Spring, Lincoln Park, Sugarland, Jerusalem, Tobytown, Stewartown, Scotland and Ken-Gar were among those recognized. At the ceremonies in Rockville were, left to right: CountyCouncilmember Valerie Ervin, Greg Wims of Stewartown, Phyllis Shaw of Tobytown, Tina Clarke of Jerusalem, James Offutt of Sandy Spring, Charlotte Coffield of Lyttonsville and Gwen Reese of Sugarland.
