CourtWatch Montgomery, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that is fighting domestic violence by working to improve the process that abuse victims face as they move through in the county courts, was honored by the County Council on July 31. Courtwatch volunteers monitor restraining hearings and documents, using their studies to recommend innovative approaches gleaned from other judicial systems and from recent research. In less than two years since the group was formed, CourtWatch has observed more than 1,000 restraining order hearings. At the ceremonies in Rockville were, left to right: Councilmember Craig Rice; volunteers Joyce Batipps, Judy Whiton and Gail Greenberg; CourtWatch Executive Director Laurie Duker; volunteer Eileen Bernstein; and Councilmember Phil Andrews.
