HONORING CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL WINNERS . . . John Henry Chaney recounts some of his experiences in World War II on Oct. 23 as the Montgomery County Council honored Mr. Chaney and his lifelong friend from northern Montgomery County, Charles Frazier, right. Councilmember Craig Rice, left, presented proclamations to the veterans, who were members of the first black unit in the U.S. Marines. Mr. Chaney and Mr. Frazier, who were in the Battle of Iwo Jima, were present in June when 366 surviving members of the original 19,000 members of the segregated unit were awarded Congressional Gold Medals—the nation’s highest honor for civilians.
