On Jan. 13, 1903, the first Korean immigrants arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, marking the first entry of Korean immigrants to the United States territories. The achievements and contributions of Korean Americans since that time were saluted by the Montgomery County Council as the County officially recognized Korean American Day for the first time—a recognition that will be repeated annually after approval of a measure whose chief sponsor was Councilmember Valerie Ervin. Councilmember Ervin, left, presented a proclamation in honor of the special day to Christina Shin, center, of the Korean American Women's Chamber of Commerce and Linda Han of the Korean American Association of Washington Metropolitan Area.
