Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin chose her groceries carefully at the Giant store in Rockville on Feb. 4—the first day of the SNAP the Silence of Poverty Challenge she organized. During the five-day challenge from Feb. 4-8, more than 300 participants will attempt to eat on $5 per day—the approximate amount allotted to residents under the federal SNAP program (formerly know as Food Stamps). Councilmember Ervin organized the SNAP Challenge to bring a spotlight on the number of low-income Montgomery residents who are in need of help from the SNAP program. All nine County Councilmembers are participating in the challenge.
