The Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, on a special appropriation to the County Government’s Fiscal Year 2014 operating budget that would provide $80,000 to the County’s Department of Correction and Rehabilitation to fully fund its one-stop career center program.

The one-stop career center provides a variety of employment services to inmates, including occupational and job search skills. For approximately eight months prior to release, a program participant prepares and practices mock interviews, perfects their explanation of their charges to potential employers and prepares tools for their job search, such as resumes and cover letters. The program teaches life skill topics, including time management, career planning and volunteerism. It also partners with a range of employers in the community to assist with job placement. Inmates are linked to community-based career centers to provide them with continuing support after they are released.

The public hearing will be held in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building, which is located at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM - Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon) and can be viewed via streaming through the County website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

Those interested in testifying at the public hearing can start signing up on Thursday, July 18, by calling 240-777-7803. Call 240-777-7910 to obtain copies of the bill.
