Montgomery County Councilmembers Nancy Floreen and Nancy Navarro will participate in a panel discussion on “Women’s Issues in Local Elected Office” as part of the 34th Annual Women’s Legislative Briefing on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Universities at Shady Grove.

The Legislative Briefing will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Building II of the Universities at Shady Grove at 9630 Gudelsky Drive in Rockville. Councilmembers Floreen and Navarro will participate in the panel discussion moderated by Joanne Bamberger from 1:30-2:15 p.m. Also participating in the panel will be former County Councilmember Valerie Ervin and Ingrid M. Turner of the Prince George’s County Council.

Ms. Bamberger, author of Mothers of Intention: How Women & Social Media are Revolutionizing Politics in America, also will be the keynote speaker of the event, which is organized by Montgomery County’s Commission for Women.

“The Commission for Women always does a terrific job with the Women's Legislative Briefing, and I'm pleased to participate in the panel discussion on women in elected office,” said Councilmember Floreen. “There are many smart and savvy women who can and should be entering elected office, and I want to give them all the encouragement and advice I can. Anyone considering running for office should stop by on Sunday and bring their best questions.”

Councilmembers Floreen and Navarro, and former Councilmember Ervin, are each former presidents of the County Council.

“I’m excited to be a panelist discussing women's issues in local elected office,” said Councilmember Navarro. “Nationwide, statistics show that women continue to be underrepresented in politics and that gap widens even more when you take into account women of color running and holding political office. It’s important to have these types of conversations and share our own stories, so that we not just recognize, but also begin to break down, barriers to success for all women interested in running for office.”

Among those scheduled to address the briefing are U.S. Senator Ben Cardin; Congressmen John Delaney, John Sarbanes and Chris Van Hollen, whose districts include Montgomery County; and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett.

The public can attend the event. For more information or to register, contact the Commission for Women via its web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/cfw
