ROCKVILLE, Md., March 12, 2012—The Montgomery County Council at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, will hold the second in a series of briefings addressing some of the most significant issues confronting the County and its future. The "Shaping Our Future: Adapting to Change" series on Tuesday will address "Our Growing Senior Population." The series will continue at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, with a briefing on "Montgomery County in The New Economy."

Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner and Vice President Nancy Navarro in January announced the creation of the series. The first briefing in January focused on changing county demographics.

Tuesday's briefing will be part of the Council's regular session at the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The briefing will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM-Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be available via streaming through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov and will be rebroadcast at various times on CCM. Starting Wednesday, March 13, the briefing will be available on demand on the County Web site by going to the CCM page.

Expected on the panel for Tuesday's briefing on the Growing Senior Population are Sandy Markwood of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging; Elinor Ginzler of the Jewish Council for the Aging; Michael Marcus of the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation; and Hank Greenberg of the Maryland Chapter of AARP.

Expected to participate in Wednesday's panel on Montgomery County and the New Economy, which will also be televised live on CCM are Brad Burnham, Managing Partner of Union Square Ventures; Wayne Jackson, CEO of Sonatype; Roger Ballentine, President of Green Strategies Inc.; David Lieber, State Policy Counsel for Google; and Steve Silverman, Director of Montgomery County's Department of Economic Development.

"This briefing series will provide my colleagues and I an opportunity to hear from national experts on a variety of issues critical to our County's future,” said Council President Berliner. “We will step back from our day-to day- work for a moment and think more broadly about the changes our County has experienced and how to best capitalize on new opportunities as they emerge. Standing still is not an option. It is imperative that we plan for 2040 and beyond."

After this week's presentations, other Shaping the Future briefings will include:

Workforce Development in a Changing Economy. March 20 - 11 a.m.

Preserving and Creating Affordable Housing. March 27 - 11 a.m.

Transit 2.0: Purple Line, CCT, and the Rapid Transit Network. April 10 - 11 a.m.

HHS Service Delivery. Date and time to be determined

Attracting the Next Generation. Date and time to be determined
