ROCKVILLE, Md., March 20, 2012—The Montgomery County Council at approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, will hold the fourth in a series of briefings addressing some of the most significant issues confronting the County and its future. The "Shaping Our Future: Adapting to Change" series on Tuesday will address "Workforce Development in the Changing Economy” trends and strategies for training the workforce of the future.
Expected to participate in Tuesday's panel on are Harry Holzer, a professor of public policy at Georgetown University and a former chief economist for the U.S. Department of Labor, and Karen Elzey, director of Skills for America’s Future, an employer-led, non-partisan partnership of businesses and community colleges.
Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner and Vice President Nancy Navarro in January announced the creation of the series. Previous briefings focused on changing county demographics, the County’s growing population of seniors and Montgomery in the new economy.
Tuesday’s briefing will be held as part of the Council’s regular weekly general session in the Third Floor Hearing Room at the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The briefing will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM-Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be available via streaming through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov and will be rebroadcast at various times on CCM, including at 9 p.m. on Friday, March 23.
All briefings are available on demand on the County Web site by going to the CCM page.
Also joining Tuesday’s panel will be DeRionne Pollard, president of Montgomery College; Adria Alpert-Romm of Discovery Communications; and Steve Silverman, director of the County’s Department of Economic Development.
The panel discussion will be followed by a short presentation from Discovery Communications, which is based in Silver Spring, regarding their recent partnership with Montgomery College. That partnership will include internships, guest lecturers, resume development and other programs designed to prepare students with marketable job skills.
“If we have the right workforce, it will serve as a magnet to attract business in the future,” said Council President Berliner. “What is clear is that the workforce of tomorrow will be much different than the workforce of the past.
