ROCKVILLE, Md., March 22, 2012—The stories of Sandy Spring residents who lived in Montgomery County during the era of segregation in the County has been recorded for future generations to see in a new documentary that will debut at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at the Sandy Spring Museum. Montgomery County Council Vice President Nancy Navarro spearheaded the effort to create the documentary, Sandy Spring: Unity in the Time of Segregation.
The public is invited to the free screening at the historic museum, which is located at 17901 Bentley Road in Sandy Spring. However, seating is limited and those interested in attending should RSVP by calling Councilmember Navarro’s office at 240-777-7968.
Councilmember Navarro put together a partnership between Montgomery County, the Ross Boddy Community Center and cable television franchisee Comcast to ensure the senior residents of Sandy Spring had their experiences documented.
“Many people who grew up in our County over the past four decades have little knowledge of life in the County for the century that preceded it,” said Councilmember Navarro. “Montgomery County was a place of segregation back then, and although we look back and are not proud of those times, segregation was part of the County’s history. By having people who actually lived through that era tell their stories, and have those stories recorded in this outstanding documentary, we will ensure that their experiences will never be forgotten.”
The residents featured in Sandy Spring: Unity in the Time of Segregation will be present with their families at the event.
The host and narrator of the documentary is emerging film maker Khalfani Hatcher.
