ROCKVILLE, Md., January 28, 2012—The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday, Jan. 29, will continue its series of informal meetings with federal elected officials when it meets with Maryland District 3 U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes at 12:30 p.m. at the County Office Building in Rockville.

The Council’s regular weekly session will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Third Floor Council Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The regular meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast will be available via streaming through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov. It will be rebroadcast on Friday, Feb. 1, starting at 9 p.m. The meeting with Congressman Sarbanes will be held in the Sixth Floor Conference Room and will be open to the public, but it will not be televised.

This will be the Council’s first meeting with Congressman Sarbanes since statewide redistricting changed the boundary lines of District 3 to now include parts of the northeast portion of Montgomery County. Congressman Sarbanes has served in the U.S. Congress since 2007. He has been appointed to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, where he serves on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade and the Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

During the Council’s regular session, a measure will be introduced for a special appropriation of $7.5 million to the Fiscal Year 13 Capital Budget and an amendment to the FY13-18 Capital Improvements Program for the Silver Spring Transit Center that is currently under construction. County Executive Isiah Leggett wrote to the Council earlier this month to say the “supplemental appropriation is needed due to cost increases related to site improvements, utilities and construction costs, as well as significant project delay costs.” His letter went on to say the County intends to seek reimbursement for the project delay costs.

Another request from the County Executive will be introduced for a special appropriation of $13.9 million to the FY13 Capital Budget and an amendment to the FY13-18 Capital Improvements Program to replace 32 Champion buses in the County’s Ride On fleet that have had fire safety problems.

At 1:30 p.m., a public hearing will be held regarding Spending Affordability Guidelines for FY14 County Operating Budget. A worksession on the guidelines is tentatively scheduled for the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee on Monday, Feb. 4.
