The Montgomery County Council today unanimously agreed to support proposals that would fund transportation projects across Maryland. Montgomery County has been seeking funding for projects including the Purple Line, the Corridor Cities Transitway and a Bus Rapid Transit system.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Speaker of the House of Delegates Michael Busch and Senate President Mike Miller have united in support of legislation that could lead to increased funding for transportation projects.
Following a discussion of the proposed measures today, Council President Nancy Navarro, Vice President Craig Rice and Councilmembers Phil Andrews, Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich, Valerie Ervin, Nancy Floreen, George Leventhal and Hans Riemer agreed to ask members of the Montgomery Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly to support proposals that would help fund much-needed transportation projects.
“Maryland’s economic future rests on our ability to fund our state’s transportation priorities,” said Council President Navarro. “The proposal to lower and index the gas tax, while adding a sales tax on the wholesale price of gasoline, will keep Maryland’s transportation funding competitive with our neighbors across the Potomac River.”
As the General Assembly enters the closing weeks of the 2013 session, the Transportation Infrastructure and Investment Act of 2013 remains one of the major issues to be addressed. Governor O’Malley recently expressed his strong support of measures that would produce transportation funding.
“Governor O’Malley’s proposal recognizes that we will rise or fall together—as One Maryland,” said Councilmember Navarro. “His statewide solution will raise revenue to fund projects from Western Maryland to the Eastern Shore. Having resources available to build our transit infrastructure and maintain our roads and bridges will help our private sector grow and economy thrive.”
