Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice will join Congressmen John Delaney, John Sarbanes and Chris Van Hollen, Governor Martin O’Malley and County Executive Isiah Leggett on Saturday, Feb. 22, as the African American Democratic Club of Montgomery County (AADCMC) and the Montgomery County Young Democrats (MCYD) host the first annual forum on the “State of Black Montgomery.” The event, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at 1 Veterans Place in downtown Silver Spring.

The sponsor organizations are being supported by other area groups in organizing the event that will address topics pertinent to the black community. In addition to some of the area’s significant elected officials, the forum is expected to bring together business leaders, community activists and community members.

Panel topics at the forum will include: Empowering and Engaging Our Youth; Increasing Our Political Participation; Addressing Our Social Justice Issues; and Advancing Our Economic Power.

“There are many groups that joined together to organize this forum and I think the issues we will talk about need to be addressed,” said Council President Rice. “These are not new issues, but not enough is being done to advance them—especially considering what we have available today in Montgomery County. There is a much better chance of getting many perspectives—and trying to find answers—when we are discussing these things in one place. A forum like this one will enable many people to participate in the discussion and I am looking forward to being part of it.”
