The Montgomery County Council today overwhelmingly voted to establish a policy of free parking at all County libraries.

"Libraries are a crucial component of lifelong public education,"
said Councilmember Phil Andrews, who sponsored the measure. "The last thing the County should do is nickel-and-dime residents who want to use our libraries. Free parking at libraries encourages library use and is good public policy. Charging for library parking establishes a de facto admissions fee for the many who must drive to a library.”

The initiative was prompted by a County government plan to charge library users for parking when the new Rockville Regional Library opens later this year, as well as for a future new Silver Spring library in downtown Silver Spring.

Parking is presently free at all existing 21 County libraries, with the sole exception of Bethesda Regional Library on weekdays until 2 p.m. This policy would also restore free parking there.
