Leggett and Local Officials to Celebrate Walk to School Day at Kensington Parkwood Elementary School
Will Launch “School Pool” Program to Encourage Walking and Biking to School
Wednesday, October 9, 2013; WALK BEGINS 9:05 a.m.
Corner of Saul and Wildwood Roads, Kensington
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will celebrate International Walk to School Day at Kensington Parkwood Elementary School, where they have begun a “School Pool” program. School Pool is a free, interactive, safe and secure matching service for parents of children who attend the same school and want to share the responsibility of transporting students to school using a “walking school bus”, a bike train or even a traditional carpool.
Joining Leggett will be County Councilmember Roger Berliner, School Board Member Shirley Brandman, State Delegate Al Carr (whose child attends Kensington Parkwood), Kensington Mayor Peter Fosselman, Kensington Parkwood. Principal Barbara Liess, Department of Transportation Director Art Holmes, Fire Chief Steve Lohr, local officials and other dignitaries will join Kensington Parkwood Elementary School students, staff and parents.
Following the walk, AAA Mid-Atlantic will sponsor two assemblies for kindergarten, first and second grades featuring the robot Otto the Auto, who will teach children safe walking tips.
Walk to School Day events focus on the need for safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
Sponsors of this year’s event at Kensington Parkwood Elementary School include Safe Kids Montgomery County, AAA Mid-Atlantic’s Foundation for Safety and Education, Federal Express, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, Montgomery County Police, Maryland Safe Routes Network, the Maryland State Highway Administration, Safe Routes to School National Partnership and Clif Kid.
Note to Editors: The event will feature fire engines, “Sparky” the fire dog, and volunteers from Federal Express.
Parking: On-street parking will be available near the school.
