County officials remind seniors that the Maryland Health Connection-Maryland’s health insurance marketplace set up for the Affordable Care Act—does not have an impact on Medicare recipients. Medicare’s open enrollment period—from October 15 through December 7, 2013—is not part of the new health insurance exchange and there is no change to Medicare enrollment. Medicare’s open enrollment period will operate the same as in previous years.
Seniors are also reminded that it is illegal for a health insurance company to sell someone a plan through the Maryland Health Connection if they already have Medicare.
Montgomery County’s Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can assist individuals during the Medicare open enrollment period. A County sponsored service, SHIP provides personalized counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Counselors provide accurate, understandable and objective information and counseling, training and assistance with a wide range of health insurance issues related to Medicare. Medicare assistance includes traditional Medicare plans, Medicare Advantage Plans (managed care) and Medicare D (prescription drug plans). SHIP can also help seniors who have questions on whether they qualify for Medicaid and long-term care insurance.
