The Montgomery County Commission for Women will host the 2014 Women’s Legislative Briefing on Sunday, January 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at The Universities at Shady Grove, Building II, 9630 Gudelsky Dr., Rockville.
The keynote speaker will be Joanne Bamberger, author of the Amazon bestseller, “Mothers of Intention: How Women & Social Media are Revolutionizing Politics in America.”
The 34th annual Women’s Legislative Briefing is co-sponsored by more than 70 women’s and community organizations, with support from major sponsors Kaiser Permanente and AARP. This year’s event will include a panel discussion addressing women’s issues in elected office, moderated by Bamberger. Panelists include Montgomery County Councilwomen Nancy Navarro and Nancy Floreen, former Councilmember Valerie Ervin and Prince George’s County Councilwoman Ingrid Turner. The conference will open with remarks by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett; Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III; Senator Ben Cardin; Congressmen Chris Van Hollen, John Sarbanes and John Delaney.
This year’s briefing also will include two special workshops for teenage girls focusing on leadership, community engagement and social media. The event will also offer seminars featuring members of the Maryland General Assembly and many of the State’s and nation’s most prominent women’s organizations. A variety of topics will be covered, including: Effective Legislative Advocacy; A Briefing on the Health Care Reform Act; Advocating for Older Women’s Issues; Women in the Public Realm; Work and Women; Women, Families and Poverty; and Safety, Justice and Human Rights. The program will conclude with a reception with County and State elected officials.
