Capital Region Shows Highest Enrollment in Maryland for Qualified Helath Plans Through Affordable Care Act

The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange announced today that 32,772 residents of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties enrolled in qualified health plans as of May 31, 2014, accounting for nearly half of the total number of Maryland residents enrolled (72,207). Statewide, more than 300,000 (300,310) residents gained Medicaid coverage as of May 31, 2014, including 95,889 PAC (Primary Adult Care) enrollees who were automatically converted on January 1 to full Medicaid coverage.

The Capital Region Connector Entity is administered by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Department of Health and the Department of Social Services. The Connector Entity is one of six organizations across Maryland responsible for outreach and enrollment efforts under the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA).

“The navigators, assisters and administrative staff worked extremely hard during the first open enrollment period and the final numbers released by the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange are clear evidence that even though challenges were experienced in Maryland, there are many residents who have benefited from the new mandate and who now have health coverage, in some cases for the first time,” said Dourakine Rosarion, project director for the Capital Region Connector Entity. “Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make this a success.”

Open enrollment for the first year is now closed and will re-open on November 15th. Medicaid enrollment continues throughout the year. Any individuals who believe they may be eligible for Medicaid can enroll by visiting a local social services office in either county. Individuals with special circumstances, like marriage, birth/adoption of a child or a recent loss of health coverage may qualify for special enrollment now by calling the Maryland Health Connection’s Consumer Support Center at 1-855-642-8572 (TTY 1-855-642-8573).
