Montgomery County was recognized this week by the Public Technology Institute (PTI) as a leader in the innovative application of Web 2.0 technologies and civic/social media tools. Montgomery County was one of only ten jurisdictions in the U.S. – including one of only two County governments – to be honored with this distinction.
“We are pleased to be recognized for our efforts to make County employees more productive and efficient through the use of emerging mobile computing technologies,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett. “Web and social media tools help us provide more direct communication with the residents we serve.”
Web 2.0 technologies and social media tools for government increasingly affect how public institutions function and deliver services. They encourage cross-agency information sharing for improved communications and service delivery, engaging the public in government decision-making and empowering staff through data access and streamlined processes. PTI recognized only those jurisdictions with specific tools, goals, participation rates, system integration, standards and policies, interoperability, data access and sharing, channel coordination and performance metrics. Montgomery County’s recognition was focused on efforts related to Enterprise Mobile Technology Support, specifically the deployment of a new and innovative Cloud-based end user support platform.
“It is gratifying for Montgomery County Government’s use of Web 2.0 technologies to be recognized by PTI,” said Montgomery County Chief Information Officer Harash (Sonny) Segal. “This effort is a centerpiece in the County’s commitment to enable it to maintain its leadership position as a responsive, accountable and open County Government.”
PTI’s Web 2.0 awards program was initiated through support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. It builds on research and outreach that PTI conducted as part of its Citizen-Engaged Communities Designation program.
