The Salvadoran-American Day Festival Will be Held August 5 in Wheaton

The Salvadoran-American Day Festival will celebrate Montgomery County’s and the Metro region’s Salvadoran community on Sunday, August 5, from noon to 6 p.m. in the Wheaton Triangle.

Montgomery County, in partnership with the Salvadoran-American Transnational Communities, (COTSA-their acronym in Spanish) along with Maryland State Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez, invites the entire community to participate in this free festival. This marks the third anniversary of this event, which commemorates Salvadoran American Day in the United States. Governor O'Malley will be issuing a state-wide Proclamation declaring August 5, 2012 as Salvadoran-American Heritage Day in Maryland.

The event will take place in the parking lot at the Wheaton Triangle at the corner of Reedie Drive and Grandview Avenue, one block north of the Wheaton Metro Station. Attendees are encouraged to park in the Metro garages on Viers Mill and Reedie Drive and Georgia and Reedie Drive which are free on Sundays.

This free, family-oriented event will feature an array of community services, including a Latino Health Fair where residents will receive free and confidential health screenings such as blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, dental, HIV, and others. The Latino Health Fair is being sponsored by CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Kaiser Permanente, and Amerigroup Foundation. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about various community services, such as Police and Volunteer Rescue opportunities, passport renewals through the Salvadoran consulate, and information about the upcoming elections from the Board of Elections -- just to name a few.

As in the past, the festival will host a variety of activities such as Salvadoran food, local craft vendors from El Salvador and other Latin American countries, and musical entertainment. Many local Latino bands are scheduled to play, covering ranges from cumbia, salsa, merengue, Rock in Spanish, to regeton, as well as a special appearance by KaRisma, coming all the way from El Salvador to play at the festival.
