|Montgomery County Plans Day of Service on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday; Dovetails with Presidential Inauguration This Year|
This year, Montgomery County’s Day of Service activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on Monday, January 21, will dovetail with the 2013 Presidential Inauguration festivities. President Obama has asked Americans to participate in service projects all weekend to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. County officials hope the community will take advantage of Monday’s “day on” by participating in service projects in the morning before Inauguration events later in the day.
Montgomery County’s Volunteer Center will coordinate indoor family-friendly service projects on Monday, January 21 at the North Bethesda Marriott Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, from 9 to 11 a.m. Projects include preparing bagged lunches for County shelters, making snow-day lunch boxes for Meals on Wheels, constructing fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice, writing pen pal letters and skyping with students in Uganda and attending a workshop of the Conflict Resolution Center. This event will also feature a volunteer fair where participants can learn more about opportunities with local organizations.
In Silver Spring, similar projects will be provided at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veteran’s Plaza, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Youth Activities for Seventh Day Adventists group will host this site in partnership with the Volunteer Center.
To pre-register for either site, go to www.montgomeryserves.org. All activities are approved for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours through Montgomery County Public Schools.
The Volunteer Center is also looking for individuals interested in serving as event staff at the Bethesda location. Staff is needed for registering participants, running craft tables, answering questions and helping with set-up and tear-down. Volunteers for this activity must be 16 years or older and can register at www.montgomeryserves.org. Orientation sessions will be provided on January 15 and 16.
Manna Food Center will hold Help the Hungry food drives on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20 at Giant grocery stores. There are still opportunities for groups to “adopt a store.” Information about the food drives is available at www.mannafood.org or 301-424-1130. As part of the food drive, non-perishable food donations will be collected on Monday at the service project sites in North Bethesda and Silver Spring.
The annual Tribute and Musical Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at the Music Center at Strathmore on Sunday, January 20 at 3 p.m. The event will feature musical and dance acts by local talent, and this year’s recipients of the Children of the Dream, Humanitarian and Literary Arts awards will be announced.
The annual musical celebration is free and open to the public, however, tickets are required and may be reserved through Strathmore’s website at www.strathmore.org. Unclaimed tickets will be released to the public at 2:45 p.m. on the day of the show.
