Montgomery County Public Libraries Celebrates National Library Week; Residents Invited to "Get Appy"

In celebration of National Library Week, April 14-20, Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) invites residents to take advantage of the free apps the library offers by installing them on their mobile devices during the “C’mon, Get Appy” campaign.

Once the apps are installed, residents, regardless of their location, can connect to their favorite library materials. They can search the catalog and place holds, download e-books, audiobooks and music, learn languages, find business and residential directory information, and read magazine and journal articles. Apps are available for use on both Apple and Android devices.

For details on the apps, visit the MCPL website at
http://montgomerycountymd.libguides.com/apps.

Residents who need to get a library card to access the apps can learn how to get one at http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/library.

Sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) since 1958, National Library Week is celebrated across the country and highlights the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. This year’s theme is “Communities matter @ your library.”

Additionally, April 16 is National Library Workers Day, a time to honor the contributions of library workers who are responsible for a wide variety of services that customers come to expect from their libraries.

They do much more than just checking books in and out. Library workers catalog and shelve materials; handle requests and send them to other libraries; answer phone calls and emails; organize programs and events; administer computer networks; update the library’s website; select and obtain books, CDs, videos, and databases and much more.

“I encourage our customers to stop by a branch on April 16 to say ‘thank you’ to the very-deserving staff,” said MCPL Director Parker Hamilton. “I applaud all the staff of MCPL for the excellent customer service they provide on a daily basis to the residents of Montgomery County,”
