Fatal Collision in Gaithersburg
 

Detectives from the Montgomery County Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred this morning in Gaithersburg.

At 8:54 this morning, the Montgomery County Police Emergency Communications Center received the report of a personal injury collision in the 800 block of South Frederick Avenue near North Westland Drive, just north of the Walnut Hills Shopping Center.

A 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling northbound on S. Frederick Avenue, when for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the car. The Mitsubishi hit the curb and hopped up on the raised concrete median. The car then struck a tree on the median.

The driver, Dung Quoc Thach, age 19, of the 9000 block of Bramble Bush Court in Gaithersburg, was transported to Suburban Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. His sole passenger, who was riding in the front seat, Erika Danielle Hottinger, age 17, of the 9500 block of Briar Glenn Way in Montgomery Village was flown to Suburban Hospital where she is receiving treatment for her non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision remains under investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit.
