Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are still investigating a fatal collision that occurred April 12 in Garret Park.
On April 12 at approximately 4:15 p.m., 1st District officers and Fire Rescue personnel responded for the report of a vehicle collision in the area of Randolph Road and Dewey Road.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford Taurus, driven by Louis C. Athanas, age 82, of the 1700 block of Woodale Drive in Silver Spring, along with a passenger, Bertha C. Roussos, age 89, of the 2900 block of Hardy Avenue in Silver Spring, was traveling westbound on Randolph Road. For unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle and struck a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Christina L. Splaine, age 21, of the 2400 block of Dennis Avenue in Silver Spring, that then struck a 1999 Dodge Caravan Minivan, driven by Hermes Sarrias, age 49, of the 4100 block of Delancy Drive in Silver Spring, both were in the left hand turn lane attempting to make a left turn onto Dewey Road.
Louis Athanas and Bertha Roussos were transported to Holy Cross Hospital and the Ms. Roussos later died as a result of her injuries. Christina Splaine was transported to Suburban Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and Hermes Sarrias was not injured. # # #
