Officer-Involved Shooting in Rockville

The Montgomery County Police and the Maryland-National Capital Park Police are investigating an incident that began early this morning in the 6500 block of Muncaster Mill Road in Rockville.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 1:30 a.m., an on-duty uniformed officer from the Maryland-National Capital Park Police stopped a burgundy 2002 Toyota Corolla for a traffic violation. The officer approached the vehicle, which had four male occupants, and immediately detected the strong odor of marijuana. As he radioed for assistance, one passenger fled from the rear driver’s side of the vehicle. The officer provided the description of the fleeing suspect to responding officers and remained with the other three suspects.

Two Montgomery County Police officers arrived on the scene; an on-duty canine officer and an off-duty patrol officer. The canine officer began tracking the fleeing suspect. The off-duty officer watched the two occupants on the passenger side of the vehicle while the Park Officer removed the driver from the vehicle.

As the driver was being handcuffed, the remaining backseat passenger opened the back door of the vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle and reached for his waistband. The off-duty officer gave the suspect commands that he refused to obey. The officer fired multiple shots at the suspect striking him in the leg. It was later discovered, that the suspect had concealed multiple individually wrapped packages of marijuana in his waistband.

The injured suspect was transported to a local trauma center where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect, who fled, was located in an adjacent neighborhood, near the Inter-County Connector. He and the two remaining suspects were taken to Montgomery County Police headquarters for questioning.

As is standard procedure, the officer, who has been with the department for four years, has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. Her name will be released tomorrow.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police-Major Crimes Division are investigating the officer-involved shooting. The Maryland-National Capital Park Police are investigating the drug related allegations. The suspects’ names will be released after charges have been placed.
