Update:  Bethesda Homicide Investigation Continues
Additional Reward Funds Announced

A team of detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Homicide/Sex Section has been dedicated to investigate the March 11, 2011, homicide and sexual assault of 30-year-old Jayna Troxel Murray, from the 1000 block of Arlington Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia; and the sexual assault of her 27-year-old female co-worker. These incidents occurred inside the “lululemon athletica” women’s athletic clothing store located at 4856 Bethesda Avenue.

Today detectives provided an update to their investigation. They are confirming that the two employees closed the business at 9:00 p.m. and set the store’s alarm at 9:45 p.m. They left the store. They returned and entered the front door at 10:05 p.m. to retrieve property that they had left behind. It is believed that shortly thereafter the two suspects, who dressed in all-dark clothing and were wearing masks and gloves, entered the store and attacked both women. It has now been confirmed that both women were sexually assaulted.

Alecia Pulman, a spokesperson for lululemon athletica announced today that the company’s corporate office is offering a reward in the amount of $125,000. To be eligible for the lululemon athletica reward and the up-to-$1,000 reward offered by Crime Solvers, and a $10,000 reward offered by Federal Realty in Bethesda, callers must call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or 240-773-TIPS (8477). Tips can also be provided by typing “MCPD” plus the tip on a cell phone or PDA and texting it to 274637 (CRIMES). Callers may remain anonymous. These rewards are offered for information provided to the tip lines that leads to the arrest and/or indictment of the persons responsible for these felony crimes. Several other businesses based in Bethesda are currently in the process of making arrangements to add to the reward funds. Any community members who would like to make reward contributions can send checks to the Montgomery County Police Media Services Division at MCP Headquarters, 2350 Research Boulevard, Rockville, Maryland 20850.

On Saturday, March 12, a female store manager arrived to open the store at approximately 8:00 a.m. She found the front door unlocked and when she stepped inside

could tell that items in the store had been disturbed. She also heard some faint noise coming
from the back of the store. Police were called at approximately 8:12 a.m., and 2nd District officers responded to the store for the report of a burglary. They found Murray dead inside at the back of the store. They also found her 27-year-old female co-worker bound and injured, but still alive. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment and was released today.

In addition to the murder and sexual assaults, a robbery of commercial proceeds occurred. It has not yet been determined if any other property was taken from the store.

Because the suspects wore masks and gloves, the race of the suspects is not known. One suspect is described as being 6’ tall, the other a little over 5’3” tall. No further description is currently available.

An autopsy is being performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause of death.

Anyone who has information about this homicide and sexual assaults and is not interested in becoming eligible for a reward is asked to call the Homicide/Sex Section at 240-773-5070. Callers may remain anonymous.
