6-27-14 Fort Detrick Standard: Public Comment Period and July 23 Information Session Regarding Toxic Waste at Forest Glen Annex

The Army invites community members to comment on an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis report and attend a public information session to learn more about its proposed alternative to prevent public exposure to historical waste disposal areas and contamination on the Forest Glen Annex. These areas are adjacent to Rock Creek Regional Park off Linden Lane just south of I-495 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

EE/CA Public comment period: June 27-Aug. 11

Information Session: July 23, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Coffield Community Recreation Center at 2450 Lyttonsville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland.

The Army is proposing installation of a fence within the Forest Glen Annex property around the Ball Field Landfill area outside the current Forest Glen Annex’s security fence line. The fence will still allow public access to portions of the Ireland Trail, while prohibiting access to the areas where contamination has been found. This includes the wooded western-most portion of the Army property and the upper-reach portion of a stream that flows through the annex and outside the Forest Glen Annex property line.

The Army proposes a fencing option as the best alternative to address environmental investigation findings of wastes within the installation boundaries, but outside the security fence line, in the former Ball Field Landfill area and adjacent stream. The Army prepared a detailed environmental report that looked at preventing public exposure to on-site waste and contamination that is outside the existing security fence line. The alternatives considered included installation of signs, several different fencing options, landfill removal, or capping.

Community members are encouraged to review the project document in the public record and submit comments. The document is available at the Silver Spring Library at 8901 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland, and online at:

A 45-day public comment period for the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis report will run from June 27-August 11. Please send written comments to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, P.O. Box 1715, ATTN: CENAB-EN-HM (Russell Marsh) or by email to Comments to be considered must be received no later than August 11.

The public is encouraged to attend the information session on July 23 to learn more about its proposed alternative to prevent public exposure to historical waste disposal areas and contamination on the Forest Glen Annex. Written comments will be accepted during the session. For additional information, please contact the Fort Detrick Public Affairs Office at (301) 619-2018.
