Cyber Security Reminder on Social Engineering

 With the significance of the devastation in Japan related to the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear power plant events, we are all thinking about opportunities to participate in the aide of those that have been affected by this recent tragedy.  However, because our human nature is to be sympathetic, cyber criminals are looking to take advantage of your concern and generosity.  This is known as “social engineering”.

Cyber crooks will tug at your heart strings; create sympathy by showing you photos; pleading for your help and finding new ways to lure you to provide personal information or monetary donations that will never reach the audience you intend to help.  These efforts will come from emails, text messages, phone messages and have already been identified in social media solutions.

This message is not intended to prevent you from pursuing trusted options for supporting and contributing to worthy organizations seeking to help those in distress.  However, it is a reminder that cyber criminals will use these emotional opportunities to swindle you or as an opportunity to steal your identity.   Please use traditional methods to verify organizations that are seeking information and money before simply “clicking” on links or providing personal information in a moment of weakness.
