Montgomery County Recreation's Ironman!

Now that our charming, superhero Tony Stark has returned to save us, again, from the dastardly evil doers who aim to overthrow our world with riotous intentions of worldly destruction, we are reminded that Iron Man rocks! And, what also rocks is that Montgomery County has its own Iron Man…a.k.a. as Jonathan Smink. Jon spends his working hours, along with his colleagues Jeremy and Larry, keeping the Germantown Indoor Aquatic Center running smoothly.

However, outside of work, Jon is the Montgomery County Recreation Ironman! Becoming an Ironman is not a simple feat; in fact, the rare athlete that makes it to the finish line has trained hard, remained dedicated and persevered to become Ironman. Spoken plainly, becoming an Ironman is real hard work! Ironman is a grueling intense competition only accomplished by the most dedicated athlete. An athlete that completes the Ironman Triathlon will swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles. Worth mentioning, is that this takes place in a meager 17 hours, not a full day, not a full year.

Jon achieved the ultimate goal of becoming Ironman in November 2011. Now that Jon has reached the goal, accomplished the intense training regiment, and pushed himself to exceed normal limits, when asked what Jon is working toward he said, “I am going to try for it again.
All of the luck to Jon as he trains for the Lake Placid Ironman competition in July 2013!

Excel Beyond The Bell - End of the Year Celebrations!

Please join us at one of the year-end celebrations featuring activities that highlight the year-long student accomplishments, a proclamation presentation, and a recognition and award ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Germantown Community Recreation Center, 18905 Kingsview Drive, Germantown and the Mid-County Community Recreation Center, 2004 Queensguard Road, Silver Spring on Tuesday, May 7 at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Laugh. Learn. Achieve.
When science, English and math subjects are connected to exciting and entertaining after school programs, such as Excel Beyond the Bell, the sky is the limit,” according to an 8th grader at Argyle Middle School and Excel Beyond the Bell (EBB)participant. Through a public-private partnership of Montgomery County Recreation Department, Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families, Inc., EBB is committed to creating an exemplary out-of-school time (OST) system that sets standards of excellence, advances professional development, creates and recognizes quality programming and secures sustainable funding investment. Considerable emphasis is placed on assisting students with engagement in positive youth development activities that increase academic and community successes, and build positive relationships within the school and communities.
Excel Beyond the Bell was introduced in Fall 2011 as part of the County Executive Isiah Leggett’s Positive Youth Development Initiative. EBB is currently located in five County Middle Schools: Argyle in Wheaton, Roberto Clemente and Neelsville in Germantown. County Executive Leggett has proposed that the program be extended to include summer programming and an additional school in fiscal year 2014, and is looking forward to eventually expanding it to all middle schools in the future.   Here are just some of this year’s EBB highlights:
·         767 youth from these five middle schools participated in out-of-school time activities such as designing and building cars and lie detectors, drawing their favorite heroes and heroines, participating in cooking contests, performing on stage through dance and theatre, developing team spirit through sports and more.
·         On February 7th, in recognition of providing quality STEM afterschool programming in Maryland, two Argyle Middle School students involved with EBB were invited to be youth ambassadors and present on Capitol Hill about the importance of after school at the “Breakfast of Champions” hosted by the Afterschool Alliance. our Excel Beyond the Bell program to be their special guest and youth ambassadors at the “Breakfast of Champions” at the Russell Senate Office Building--an annual event celebrating Afterschool Champions from across the country and highlighting the importance of afterschool program.
·         Over 100 families from Clemente Middle School recently participated in the IBM sponsored Family Night for children and families to learn more about cyber bullying.
·         36,810 hot meals have been served so far this year to these and other students participating in out-of-school time programs.
Another major component of the EBB out-of-school time system is the professional development of youth workers. Research shows that the professional development of staff leads to better practice with youth, improves program quality, and increases the positive outcomes of youth.  From August 2012 to April 2013, 624 youth workers participated from over 30 organizations in 29 trainings such as structure and clear limits, reframing conflict, cultural competency, and a 30-hour Advancing Youth Development (AYD) certificate program.  Regular networking sessions for youth workers have been established, and a sub-committee is working with Montgomery College to initiate a youth worker credential or certificate program that will begin in Spring 2014.

Register Today For Summer Camps and Programs!

With summer just around the corner, the Recreation Department continues to work hard preparing programs to ensure that kids have plenty of adventures, activities and fun this upcoming summer camp season. The Recreation Department’s summer programs are always a hit with working parents because they offer affordable, extensive programming options throughout the summer. Graphic: Recreation Logo

In addition to the ever popular arts, sports and nature camps, Recreation has added some new choices this year, including Lego engineering camp and “Let’s Move” camp.

Another great option is the Summer Fun Centers. The programs serve children ages five to 12, and include activities such as sports, games, skits and drama, music and special events. Activities are well planned and supervised. The one-time flat fee of $350 per child provides families with summer programming from June 24 to August 2.

Registration is limited and programs are beginning to fill, so parents are encouraged to consider the summer camp choices for their children now. To see all of the summer camp offerings, go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec or pick up a Summer Camp Guide at any County public library or Recreation department facility.

Summer Camp Will Be Here Before We Know It!

Photo: Summer Camp

Hard to believe, but it’s time to start thinking about summer camps and programs. Aquatics, dance, nature, robotics and sports are just a few of the summer camp options available for tots to teens and all skill levels at hundreds of locations around the County.

Choosing the perfect summer camp can sometimes be overwhelming, with so many factors to consider, and having a strategy can make things easier. A good way to begin is to determine programs that will be interesting and stimulating for your child and that work in the scheduling for the whole family. The following checklist may make it a little easier when determining the summer camps that best fit your family’s needs.

Determine your child’s preferences for summer programs

  • Loves outdoors or indoors
  • Thrives in small group or large groups
  • Likes structured activities or prefers unstructured free-play
  • Prefers active sports or less physical
  • Outgoing and enjoys the spot-light or quieter, more reserved
  • Has multiple interests or focused interest
Hint: Sports, creative arts, history, computers, science, math, or traditional camps and summer fun centers are a just a few of the options..

Does it fit the family schedule?
Morning and afternoon rush hours can cause havoc when traveling in Montgomery County, so it is important to have drop-off and pick-up locations that are convenient. Some factors to consider:
  • Work schedule

  • Carpooling schedule
  • Siblings’ schedules
Hint: Montgomery County Recreation has locations throughout the County. Extended hours can be a lifesaver for families with scheduling challenges and offer supervised play activities before and after camp hours.

Does the program fit the family budget?
  • Consider the number of children you will be sending to camp
  • Determine a budget for the entire summer
  • When looking at costs, it is often helpful to weigh the benefits of a more expensive program. The quality of a program is not determined by the cost of the program, but rather by the staff training, staff-to-participant ratios and adherence to guidelines and safety standards.
Hint: Summer Fun Centers are a great option for budget-minded families. The $350 registration fee covers six weeks of summer programming at locations throughout the County.

Registration for Recreation Department camps and programs opened on January 22. Early registration is encouraged, as many programs will fill early. The new 2013 Summer Camp Guide is available at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec.

Photo: Rita DiLazzaro Celebrates Her 103rd Birthday

Montgomery County Recreation participants may have the secret to living a full and vibrant life! Just ask Rita DiLazzara who celebrated her 103rd birthday with a special party given by the Clara Barton Community Recreation Neighborhood Senior Program on January 23.

The birthday celebration included residents of the community, members of Clara Barton Senior Sensations and invited guests including County Executive Ike Leggett and Montgomery County Recreation Director Gabe Albornoz. The County Executive wished Ms. DiLazzara a happy birthday and presented a commemorative certificate honoring her special day. Rita spiritedly reassured Leggett that she was looking forward to many more birthday celebrations.

Recreation Is Good For You!

It is often a struggle to balancing all of our responsibilities with the importance of taking time to keep healthy. Recreation is extremely important to health and well-being and should be on the “must do” rather than the “get around to it” list.

According to research from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), health care costs are the largest single expenditure in the United States. Numerous studies substantiate the correlation between active involvement in recreational activities and increased health benefits. It may be that a healthy dose of art, dance or swimming should be shelved right next to the other prevention products found at your local pharmacy.

Aquatic facilities, community recreation and senior centers are located conveniently throughout Montgomery County to provide easier access to programs and activities. The Spring Recreation and Leisure Guide, which is available on line at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec has hundreds of programs and activities for all ages, abilities and interests. Find your passion today!

State-of-the-Art Vending Machine Comes to Montgomery County

County employees may find it a little easier to purchase healthier snacks from Montgomery County vending machines. On October 17, the County unveiled its sleek new healthful snack vending machine, 2bU in the Executive Office Building in downtown Rockville. This premium all-natural vending program is a reflection of the County’s efforts to offer healthier choices to employees. 2bU was introduced during an exciting press event that included County Executive Isiah Leggett, Councilmember George Leventhal, Department Directors Gabe Albornoz, David Dise and Uma Ahluwalia, and County Health Officer, Dr. Ulder J.Tillman. This is an important first step to increase healthier vending machine choices in all County facilities.

Many people are initially attracted to the colorful, fancy, interactive computer on the machine that provides on the spot nutritional information about the foods. What will likely keep people coming back for more are the tasty healthier foods and beverages.

Nutritious food choices and exercise and fitness activities are natural partners for individuals aiming to live a healthier lifestyle. Recreation Department Director, Gabe Albornoz, led the way in an invigorating walk following the vending machine unveiling. He was joined by Councilmember George Leventhal, DGS Director David Dise and HHS Director Uma Ahluwalia.
The Vending Machine Project was developed by the Obesity Prevention Strategy Group, a public-private coalition dedicated to reversing the obesity trend, in keeping with the County’s goal to make Montgomery County the healthiest County in the nation. By doing more to prevent and reduce obesity and promote good health by improving the health habits of employees, the County can set an example for the community.

Excel Beyond the Bell

For many, memories of middle school may conjure up thoughts of being last in the lunch line, fear of being squished in a locker, or not being picked for a team. However, the Excel Beyond the Bell program is giving many Montgomery County middle students different kind of memories such as scuba diving robots, building remote control cars, warm apple muffins, and creative arts programs and activities. The Montgomery County Recreation Department (MCRD), Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Collaboration Council for Children, Youth, and Families (Collaboration Council) have worked together to build an inclusive after-school program that makes kids want to stay at school.

Excel Beyond the Bell is an innovative after-school program developed as a unique partnership between MCRD, MCPS and the Collaboration Council. The award winning Excel Beyond the Bell is identified as the state-of-the-art out-of-school programming model that will likely be adopted for all Montgomery County afterschool programs as resources become available. Afterschool hours have been identified as the time when middle school students are the most at risk.

Excel Beyond the Bell is a second year pilot program that serves A. Marion Loiederman, Argyle, Forest Oak, Neelsville, and Roberto Clemente Middle Schools. Early qualitative and quantitative data analysis indicates the partnership efforts are highly successful and offer substantial benefits supporting the collaboration as effectively and positively engaging the students both academically and socially. The program also passes the middle-school student standards – it offers good food, is fun, and you do not have to dress up.

County Executive’s Youth Advisory Committee To Hold Teen Forum

Teens are encouraged to share their experiences, insights and solutions to problems with County Executive Ike Leggett, members of the County Council and representatives from Montgomery County Public Schools at a Teen Forum to be held on Thursday, May 31 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veteran’s Place, Silver Spring.

Members of Leggett’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) that provides Montgomery County teens the opportunity to develop leadership skills while serving their communities are organizing the free event. Appointed by the County Executive, YAC members represent youth from across the County. The committee works to strengthen students’ voices in the schools through “speak outs” and contact with County government. Another part of the committee’s mission is to help eliminate violence, alcohol and other drug use, and help fight racial discrimination through multicultural education.

Senior Fitness Classes keep 93-Year-Old "Feeling Stronger"

stretchThe weights may be lighter, and the moves are modified, but these active residents are staying strong and fit with Senior Fitness classes offered around the county!

From stretching and strength training to yoga, seniors can find a range of fitness classes that are perfect for any level. As they say, it’s never too late to get fit. As 93-year-old Chevy Chase resident Joe Holmes explained, “I feel stronger since I started taking classes. I now work out 3 times a week and I have arm muscles again!”

senior fit

We stopped into the Holiday Park Senior Center recently to check out a weight training class.

Participants use light weights to build strength, and use the wall and chairs for stretching and balance moves - including holding a plank position! Trained instructors can help participants modify moves when necessary so they feel comfortable.

For more information on fitness classes for seniors and specifically those held at the Holiday Park Senior Center visit the website http://holidaypark.us/ or call 240-777-4999.

Spring Sports Updates and Announcements

Spring weather can wreak havoc on both the game schedule, and the fields. How can you find out if your outdoor game or class has been cancelled due to weather or field conditions? Follow these three steps:

1. Use the weather hotline for current conditions: 240-777-6889

2. Subscribe to e-alerts where you will receive updates on park or facility closures direct to your mobile phone. https://alert.montgomerycountymd.gov/index.php?CCheck=1

3. Contact the coach, instructor or activity provider. Before the season gets underway, make sure the instructor or coach has established a procedure for alerting participants (or their parents or both) to field conditions. Many times the coaches or instructors have the most updated information and the decision to cancel or postpone is up to them.

Summer Camps Are Fun and Educational!

Montgomery County Recreation is the perfect place for parents who are creatively thinking of ways to keep their children actively engaged this summer. Whether kids love the tried and true traditional camp activities such as games, sports, skits, and swimming, or the less conventional summer camp activities such as magic and math, Montgomery County Recreation is the place to find the perfect camp. From building robots, to twirling batons there are plenty of amazing activities to ensure that children have oodles of fun this summer!
Summer camp is a time for friendships, fun, and being a kid. In the past, summer camp meant going away from home to spend a week in the woods at a sleep-a-way camp. However, as family dynamics have changed, so have summer camps. To effectively serve today’s families, most municipal recreation agencies offer summer day camps. Everyone knows that summer camps are fun, but a well-kept secret is that summer camps are quite educational. The valuable life lessons learned at camp will not be found in textbooks or classrooms, but rather on playgrounds, swimming pools, and art studios. Conflict resolution, teamwork, and development of interpersonal skills are a few of the important lessons children actively learn while involved in summer camp programs.
Summer camp is the perfect place for children to learn life skills lessons that parents desperately try to teach. Miracles seem to happen at summer camp, as the kid who seems incapable of picking up clothes off the floor, can astonishingly put their things away and keep their clothes off a swimming pool locker room floor. Picky eaters that won’t eat anything other than macaroni and cheese, will often inhale eyeballs, worms, brains and blood, the foods that adults commonly refer to as grapes, gummies, cauliflower, and tomato juice. There is something magical for a child that rounds third base and heads for home plate, after working hard to hit a homerun. The life lessons may not help the math grades, but I bet if you ask most 11-year-old girls to add the  number of humps on Camel Alice, the age of Justin Bieber on March 1, and the number of days that kids are out of school on summer break, they will quickly come up with sum of 98.
Montgomery County Recreation offers hundreds of affordable programs throughout the summer. The Summer Programs Guide is available on the Montgomery County Recreation website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec. Families have the option of half-day, full day, and extended day. Convenient on-line registration is available. Register today, after all, you don’t want to be the parent of a kid that has missed out on the annual summer renditions of Duck Duck Goose, Doggy Doggy, Where is Your Bone, and Little Bunny Foo Foo!

Recreation Is Good For You!

This unseasonably warm winter has left snow lovers clinging to the hope of at least one big storm, but many others are keeping fingers crossed that the mild winter will continue. Numerous adults see snow synonymously with shoveling, scraping, slippery roads, messy floors, and pinches with childcare arrangements. Many of us yearn for a simpler time when snow meant school is closed so we can sleep late and then hit the sleigh-riding hill! The snow reminds us that sometimes it is hard for highly achieving adults to balance all of the “have to do” responsibilities with taking time to relax and have fun.

Truth be told though, recreation is an extremely important to health and well-being and should be on the “have to do” list rather than on the “get around to it” list. According to research from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), health costs are the largest single expenditure in the United States. Numerous studies substantiate the correlation between active involvement in recreational activities and increased health benefits. It may be that we need to include our local Recreation Community Centers right along with our local pharmacy when looking for relief from our ailments.
For find out more information about County Community Centers, or any Montgomery County Recreation program please go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec.

Burning Off the Pumpkin Pie!

Every Thanksgiving there are those of us who relentlessly declare that pumpkin pie is a vegetable. The good news is one doesn’t have to rationalize or make excuses to enjoy a bountiful dinner with all of trimmings. Thanksgiving is a time that Americans should enjoy the traditional meal, including the pumpkin pie with whipped cream, without any guilt.
Thankfully, one day of celebratory eating does not have to be a major set-back. In fact, scheduling an extra hour of aerobic exercise may be all you need to stay healthily on track after a day of feasting. There are many ways to exercise and have fun, whether it is an hour on the basketball courts, working out at the gym, or swimming. Scheduling one of these activities in additional to your regular fitness program can easily burn off that pumpkin pie!
Montgomery Recreation has exercise rooms, gymnasiums, and indoor swimming pools to make fitness during the winter easier than ever. Check out www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec to find a MontgomeryCountyCommunity Center or AquaticsCenter close to you.

Afterthoughs about the Mascot Challenge!

Feeling confident as the 11th seed against Louie from the Bowie Baysox, I began the competition strong and with a taste for victory.  I was highly prepared for the tournament, having spent the past year in an intense training program regimented by the Notre Dame Leprechaun, the Hokey Bird and Nittany Lion. The past year of preparation helped me feel highly prepared and ready to play!

Although keenly focused and geared for a win, the primary goal was to play fairly, have a good time, and do the best I could. Going head to head against the likes of Slapshot from Washington Capitals, Uncle Slam from the Potomac Nationals and home court favorite Battlin’ Baron from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School was somewhat intimidating.  Even though this was a fierce competition, this was my chance to play on television and represent the Recreation Department. Only my very best would do.

Taking an easy lead and pounding the court with spirited determination, I had the eye on victory when Louie took a quick and unpredictable right. It was only a second of distraction but Louie stole the ball and he was off like a speeding comet. After a heated competition and extremely grueling game the game ended with a score of Louie 2 – T-Recs 0.  I played well, I played hard and I represented MCRD with honor, dignity and nonsense. After all, that is really what it is all about isn't it?

Recreation Department Sponsors Food Drive to Benefit Manna Food Bank

The Montgomery County Department of Recreation is sponsoring a food drive – now through December 9 – to support the Manna Food Bank. Residents are encouraged to participate by donating non-perishable food items at any of the department’s community, recreation, aquatic or senior centers. Manna serves thousands of families each year and relies on generous donations to keep the shelves stocked so that families have the food they need.

The Recreation Department also serves thousands of residents through numerous recreation and leisure programs, and in many instances, recreational facilities are the heart and central meeting place for the communities. The annual food drive is a way for the Recreation Department and the entire community to work together to ensure that neighbors have food on their table.

To locate the closest recreational facility, go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec.

What’s new in the Winter Recreation and Leisure Guide?

Hey All!  As I was looking through the new winter Recreation and Leisure Guide, I found some remarkable and wonderful new classes and programs.  The new Dynamic Art class sounds fun! Crazy Cactus, Blazing Banyan tree, and Reptile Relief - what in the world could this mean? This art class for 7 to 12 year olds uses paints, paper chalk, pastels, markets, glue and more! For the adult artist the new Wedding & Formal Invitations class is a cost effective means to make professional and creative invitations.

For those of us, that love to sham it up, did you see the new Acting Workshop for Kids and Acting for Teens? These programs offer acting with a twist. The actors use the theater as an avenue to voice and express concern for social issues. Need a laugh? Take a look at the Comedy Cabaret or the Kids Comedy College & Cabaret.
There are so many classes, programs and services in the new issue of the Recreation and Leisure Guide! You can view the Recreation and Leisure Guide on-line at: http://recweb.montgomerycountymd.gov

Welcome

Hey, T-Recs here, the friendly dinosaur that found a home with the Department of Recreation in March, 2006. I love the Department of Recreation because we are all about endless fun and I love fun! Whether at the swimming pool, a softball game, summer camp or dance class, there is always fun!

dog with frisbee at the poolI wanted to start a blog to recount all my adventures with the Department of Recreation. It’s a great way to keep in touch with and hear from my friends. I will update the blog regularly with pictures, announcements, and will also be sharing your comments and feedback (so please e-mail). Whether the Silver Sneakers program, the awesome classes and programs or the new Wisconsin Place opening - there is always fun to be had…with the Department of Recreation.

bassett hound in poolYou won't believe this...I stopped off at the Glenmont Pool on September 12th.  Something you don't see every day, 300 dogs swimming in the pool.  It was the annual Pool Pooch Party!  There were dogs everywhere...it was pet-tacular!  I have never seen so many drenched pups in my life. The dogs had a great time romping in the water and us two-legged folk loved watching the dogs splashing around.

I have to run, I am on my way to see what else I can find. Don’t forget…keep checking back and please e-mail at T.Recs@montgomerycountymd.gov .  I would love to hear from you.  Let me know you if you go to any of the Department of Recreation programs, events, classes, or activities.
