Halloween Happens at Montgomery County Recreation!


Whether looking for not-so-scary activities suitable for young children or for Halloween horror, the Recreation Department is the Halloween happening place. Registration, required for all activities, is available at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec.

Free Activities:
Halloween Happenings -- Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center, October 26, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for ages 12 and under. Includes games, crafts, D.J., dancing, moonbounce, & treats.

Halloween Extravaganza - East County Community Recreation Center, October 27, noon to 2 p.m. for K-5th grade. Includes games, prizes, face painting, costumes, crafts, candy counting contest & more!

Halloween Magic Show – Mid County Community Recreation Center, October 26, 7 to 9 p.m. for all ages. Experience the high-energy magic and comedy of Speed, a premier entertainer. Refreshments and craft activities follow the show.

The following activities have a nominal fee:
Halloween Hoot Dance - $2 at the door. Holiday Park Senior Center, October 31, 1:15 to 3:15 p.m., ages 55+. Music by the Night and Day Band; costumes welcome but not required.

Fall Harvest Fest - $3 per person (5 and under free). Wheaton Community Recreation Center, November 3, 3 to 6 p.m. for all ages. Family fun activities to celebrate autumn.

Haunted Forest - SCARY! -- $12. Damascus Community Recreation Center, October 26 – 31, 7 to 9 p.m. This activity, not for the squeamish, is perfect for those looking for a Halloween scare! (This activity is not recommended for children under eight years old. Parents must accompany children under 12 years.)

Youth Basketball!

Youth BasketballRegistration Deadline is November 9 for Instructional K-2 and Youth Leagues
The instructional basketball league is for boys and girls in grade K-2. To register a pre-formed team, you must call 240-777-6870 for a coach’s packet, or go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec to download the appropriate forms. Team registration requires full payment for a minimum of 8 players (12 max) from the same school or district, player forms, and a volunteer coach. NOTE: MCRD reserves the right to add players to rosters. Fee is $75 per person and practices begin the weekend of January 5-6 2013.

For Youth League
The youth league is for boys and girls in grades 3-8. To register a team call 240-777-6810 or download the appropriate forms at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec Players who register as individuals will be assigned to a team closest to their school or neighborhood as space allows. Players may not register in a league below their grade level, but they can play up a grade. Teams may not have more than 3 players on their roster who participate in a select team. Fee for teams in grades 3-5 is $80 per person. Fee for teams in grades 6-8 is $95 per person. Coaches will contact players on or before December 3rd to announce practice schedules and locations.

Opportunity for Community Involvement


The Damascus Community Center invites community members to be involved in building the Haunted Forest. There are a variety of opportunities including acting and behind the scenes. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours are available. For more information, call Linda Panagoulis at 240-777- 6930.

Family Recreational Swims for Indoor Fun on the Weekends

Missing those warm summer days? Montgomery County Recreation is the perfect place to capture a bit of summer on cold dreary days. You can enjoy splashing with the kids under the tumble buckets, sliding down one of the many water slides, practice your swan dive, or just relaxing in the hot tub.

Both children and adults love Montgomery County Recreation pools.  Facilities schedules vary so be sure to check each location for their open swim schedule. Below is a summary for each location.

Germantown Indoor Swim Center - 240-777-6830
Leisure Pool and Slide Open: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Evening Rec Swim: Monday 7 – 8:30 pm, Friday 7 – 9 pm
Weekend Rec Swim: Saturday 2 – 4 pm and 5 – 7 pm, Sunday 1 – 3 pm and 4 – 6 pm

New White Oak Senior Center Is Now Open!


Montgomery County Recreation has opened its fifth senior center located in the White Oak Community Recreation Center. Sharing state-of-the-art amenities with the community center, the senior center is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and beginning in January will extend its hours to Monday through Friday.

The new senior center will offer programming that emphasizes fitness, socialization and wellness.
