State-of-the-Art Vending Machine Comes to Montgomery County

County employees may find it a little easier to purchase healthier snacks from Montgomery County vending machines. On October 17, the County unveiled its sleek new healthful snack vending machine, 2bU in the Executive Office Building in downtown Rockville. This premium all-natural vending program is a reflection of the County’s efforts to offer healthier choices to employees. 2bU was introduced during an exciting press event that included County Executive Isiah Leggett, Councilmember George Leventhal, Department Directors Gabe Albornoz, David Dise and Uma Ahluwalia, and County Health Officer, Dr. Ulder J.Tillman. This is an important first step to increase healthier vending machine choices in all County facilities.

Many people are initially attracted to the colorful, fancy, interactive computer on the machine that provides on the spot nutritional information about the foods. What will likely keep people coming back for more are the tasty healthier foods and beverages.

Nutritious food choices and exercise and fitness activities are natural partners for individuals aiming to live a healthier lifestyle. Recreation Department Director, Gabe Albornoz, led the way in an invigorating walk following the vending machine unveiling. He was joined by Councilmember George Leventhal, DGS Director David Dise and HHS Director Uma Ahluwalia.
The Vending Machine Project was developed by the Obesity Prevention Strategy Group, a public-private coalition dedicated to reversing the obesity trend, in keeping with the County’s goal to make Montgomery County the healthiest County in the nation. By doing more to prevent and reduce obesity and promote good health by improving the health habits of employees, the County can set an example for the community.

SwiMontgomery is the Perfect Maintenance Program for The Summer Competitor

SwiMontgomery is a developmental program for kids 12 and under who are interested in swimming competitively or who compete in the summer but aren’t ready to swim year round competitively. This 8-week program is held twice a week and helps to develop a foundation of skills. Participants are evaluated and assigned to groups based on their previous knowledge and demonstrated skill.

For young summer swimmers, this program will help them retain the skills they developed during the summer months. It will also help with conditioning so when it is time to start back to a daily swim routine they will be ready to go!

SwiMontgomery is offered at all four indoor swim centers: MLK, Germantown, Kennedy Shriver and Olney. Fee is $190 for 16 sessions. For more information and course numbers see page 13 of The Recreation and Leisure Programming Guide.
