Many of us approach the New Year with a renewed commitment to becoming healthier. We are bombarded with new trends that claim to help us lose weight and get in shape, however, the most effective method has always been to choose healthier foods, control portions and increase physical activity. Often we take an all-or-nothing approach to fitness but sticking with activities and making small changes in our routine can yield positive health benefits.
Activities such as swimming, dancing, martial arts and fitness classes are fun and they burn calories. For those who prefer a less structured workout, the weight and exercise rooms at the Recreation Department’s community recreation centers are affordable and convenient ways to exercise.
Exercise is not only good for you but it can also increase work productivity and is an excellent way to manage stress and maintain a positive attitude. County career staff is reminded to take advantage of the employee discount for Recreation programs and memberships. For more information on the employee discounts, click here
Registration for spring programs opens on February 13. The spring Recreation and Parks Guide
will be available online at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec
on February 3. The spring Guide has hundreds of programs and activities for all ages and interests.

In the midst of frigid winter temperatures, it may be hard to think about summer but many parents have already made plans for what their children will do during the summer out-of-school months. Montgomery Recreation has hundreds of summer programs to keep kids actively involved in activities. Sports, nature and art are the most popular camps, but there are also aquatics, engineering, magic and horseback riding.
Summer Fun Centers are a great deal for parents looking for safe, affordable recreation activities. The programs serve children ages 5 - 12 years and include sports, games, skits and drama activities, music and special events. The activities are well planned and supervised and kids love the fun. The one-time flat fee of $350 provides families with summer programming from June 23 to August 1.
To help families manage the cost of summer programming, the Recreation Department offers a convenient payment plan that can be set up through RecWeb, the online registration system. There is no need to worry with remembering to make payments as they are automatically processed from the customer’s credit card each month. Many families find this method helpful as it provides a way to budget incrementally rather than having to pay all up front. For more information on the payment plan, information on summer programs or to register, go to www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec.
