We have cancelled Montgomery County-provided recycling, yard trim, and trash collection service for Monday and Tuesday, due to the high wind and storm conditions that have been predicted.
After the storm, all collections will slide, and be two days later than normal.
Assuming that roads are passable, we will resume our normal collection schedule on Monday, November 5, 2012.
If you (or your community) have a private contract for your trash collection, or if you live in a municipality, our schedule announcements may not apply to your trash service -- check with your hauler or community manager.

Update for Monday, July 2, 2012
We are running normal recycling and trash collection services today for our Monday residents. Collection may be slower than normal -- we're expecting increases in trash as a result of residents disposing of spoiled food, as well as potentially blocked neighborhood streets and dark traffic signals.
Here are some specifics for cleaning up
For curbside collection of storm debris, the usual yard trim bundling requirements remain in effect:
- Individual pieces of brush must be no longer than 4 feet long, and no thicker than 4 inches in diameter.
- Bundles of brush must be no wider than 30 inches in diameter.
- Bundles of brush, and bags or cans of yard trim must weigh less than 45 pounds.
- There is no limit on how much yard trim you may set out for collection.

Recycling in Montgomery County just got easier!
Our recycling program now accepts #1 PET thermoform packaging. This is packaging made from plastic resin #1, also called "polyethylene terephthalate". To shape it, sheets of this resin are warmed and then pressed into molds.
To recycle the new items, shake out any crumbs, give the items a quick rinse if needed, and add them to your blue recycling bin for collection.
What is included in this program expansion? Clamshell containers! In addition, we now take trays, deli containers, lids, domes, and cups.
Read more detail about the plastics our recycling program accepts. Download our plastics postcard (PDF, 1.1 MB) for handy reference.
Here are examples of some of the new plastic items…

Clamshell containers

Bakery trays and cake domes

Condiment cups

Cups

Deli trays and containers

Fruit and vegetable containers and baskets

Tubs and lids

Want information about composting (and compost bin pickup locations); curbside recycling for leaves, grass, and brush; yard trim decals; or leaf vacuuming? We've compiled all the web links you need onto one handy page: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/yardtrim
Please do not put leaves into plastic bags. (The leaves are composted, and plastic bags cause tremendous problems in the composting process and finished product.)
New Montgomery County Carryout Bag Law Effective January 1, 2012
Under the new carryout bag law, all retail establishments in the County that sell goods and provide their customers with a bag (either paper or plastic) to carry out purchases will be required to charge 5 cents per bag, beginning January 1, 2012.
Visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/bag for details. Resources include fact sheets for residents and retailers, webinars for retailers, and more.
Wednesday, October 19, 2011
Starting January 1, 2012, retail establishments in Montgomery County, Maryland which provide plastic or paper bags to customers are required to charge 5-cents a bag. Shoppers can avoid the charge—and help reduce litter in the County—by bringing their own bag for purchases.
Montgomery County’s Carryout Bag Law (8-11) is a low-cost incentive to
- encourage shoppers to use reusable bags,
- refuse bags for their purchases, and
- encourage retail cashiers to ask whether a bag is even needed.
Plastic bags are consistently one of the top items found in studies of litter in Montgomery County. This Law is intended to help reduce litter in our waterways, on our streets and in our parks. Proceeds from the Carryout Bag Law go exclusively to programs that fight litter and provide stormwater pollution control in Montgomery County.
The Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Finance are jointly hosting free half-hour Webinars to help retailers understand the County's Carryout Bag Law requirements and receive answers to their questions without leaving their workplace.
To learn more about the Carryout Bag Law, including the webinar schedule and fact sheets for residents and retailers, visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/BAG
Have questions on the Carryout Bag Tax or on the webinar content? E-mail the Department of Environmental Protection or dial 3-1-1 (240-777-0311 outside Montgomery County, MD).

What's unique about the newest recycling and trash trucks used by our contracted hauling companies? They are fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). In fact, they are the first CNG solid waste collection vehicles in Maryland!
We have 20 CNG trucks on the road right now. They are serving neighborhoods in Bethesda and Silver Spring/Kemp Mill. Our contractors expect to add another 21 CNG trucks to their fleets in Fall 2010.
Why CNG? One of the benefits is that these vehicles create less pollution than conventional diesel-fueled trucks.
Here's a side view of a CNG recycling truck at Montgomery County's Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Station:

Here's the same truck from the rear. It has a "split hopper" design: the left compartment holds commingled recyclables -- the items you set out in your blue bins -- and the right compartment holds mixed paper.

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day with us at two paper shredding/recycling and household goods/clothing donation collection events!
Here are some of the questions we've been getting:
I am concerned about identity theft. Can I watch my paper be shredded?
Yes, you certainly may watch! In fact, the shredding trucks are equipped with a video camera and monitor. You are welcome to observe the monitor as your paper is fed into the shredder and processed.
What happens to the paper after it's shredded?
All of the shredded paper is recycled.
What paper, and clothing and household items, will you accept?
We have a list of participation/donation guidelines on our Earth Day page. For even more detail, check the website of the organization accepting items at the collection event you want to attend -- our Earth Day page has the links.
When will you have other shredding and donation events in our area?
For now, we have the April 17 and 18 events on our calendar, choosing both a Saturday and a Sunday in two different areas of the County to make participation convenient for as many residents as possible.
Keep an eye on our website for updates. As we plan other events in the future, we'll post the information to our site and blog.
Help us top the numbers we achieved at our America Recycles Day shredding and donation events in November 2009: 11,000 residents brought in 40,000 pounds of paper to be shredded and recycled, and filled 7 donation trucks!
And, if you have time after dropping off your paper and donations, stay and enjoy the Ridge Road Recreational Park or Wheaton Regional Park. Both have picnic facilities and more!
Event Dates
Saturday, April 17, 2010 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (Rain or Shine) Ridge Road Recreational Park (map) Picnic Area Parking Lot 21155 Frederick Road Germantown, MD 20876

Our Solid Waste Transfer Station has been receiving an extremely large volume of trees limbs that came down during last winter’s snow storms.
If possible, we ask you to make use of the weekly recycling collection for yard trim from your home. See our Storm Cleanup page for preparation instructions.
If you want to deliver the material to the Transfer Station yourself because you have larger tree sections or limbs, please be prepared for the possibility of long lines during peak periods on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Transfer Station has evening hours from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. These hours are lightly used and would assure a quick and efficient drop-off.
Residents may bring in as much natural wood waste / yard trim as they want from their own home. The 500 pound limit for the public drop-off facility only applies to trash.

Why are we canceling yard trim collection next week?
Without yard trim collection next week, our contractors can focus on the greater-than-usual volume of trash and recyclables we expect you to set out.
What is the status of bulk trash and scrap metal recycling collections I requested for last week?
If you requested a bulk trash or scrap metal recycling collection for the week of February 8-12, 2010, we have asked our contractors to collect your items during the week of February 15-19, 2010. This applies to items which
- didn’t get collected due to collection cancellations
- didn’t get set out last week, and which you will set out on your collection day during the week of February 15-19
- are at the curb but are currently covered by snow.
Crews will collect material that is retrievable. However, they are not expected to shovel snow or excavate items for collection.

Recycling and Trash Collection Status
The collection status update for Montgomery County-provided recycling and trash collections for today, Tuesday, February 9, 2010, is:
- Trash collection only.
- We will be working on routes normally serviced on Mondays and Tuesdays. All trash items must be at the curb for pickup.
- No recycling collection for the remainder of the week.
- We have canceled all recycling and yard trim pickups.
(Yesterday, we had planned to "slide" all collection days this week. Because of current road conditions on neighborhood streets and the additional snow in the weather forecast, we have canceled the slide.)
Solid Waste Transfer Station
The Shady Grove Transfer Station plans to be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, with no evening hours.
If site conditions deteriorate and the site roads and drop-off areas areas become slick, we may close the Transfer Station earlier.

The salt on the roads did its job, and so we are on our normal recycling and trash collection schedule this morning. We'll continue to check road conditions -- if your street is unpassable when a collection truck comes through in the morning, we'll send the truck back to you before the end of the day.
Gardening tip (yes, in the middle of winter!): All of the Christmas trees you set out for recycling, and which we ground up, make this a great time to pick up a load of our mulch for your spring projects. (See our tree-grinding operation at the Shady Grove Transfer Station.)

Today is the first day of the 2009 leaf vacuuming program! The Montgomery County Department of Transportation's Division of Highway Services, one of our sister agencies, provides this service in the Leaf Collection District. This District's general boundaries are: south of Bel Pre Road, east of I-270/I-495 and west of New Hampshire Avenue, to the District line.
Please help crews by
- Noting the information on the posted signs
- Raking leaves to the road edge (not into the street itself) or placing leaves in paper yard waste bags.
- Not placing leaves out for collection in plastic bags.
- Keeping parked vehicles away from leaf piles
Read full details on leaf vacuuming, including a service area map and progress updates. Don't have leaf vacuuming service in your neighborhood? We provide our weekly curbside yard trim collections -- including leaves in paper yard trim bags or reusable cans -- year-round! You may order yard trim decals for your cans online. Also, consider composting leaves. We offer compost bins at no additional charge to you. Keep all of our yard trim links handy through one convenient web page: http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/yardtrim

Ever wonder what happens to the leaves and grass we set at the curb for yard trim pickup? It gets composted, and the end product is sold as Leafgro®.
The University of Maryland's Home and Garden Information Center recently uploaded a YouTube video on No Till Gardening. It shows how easy it is to turn lawn into garden, and... features Montgomery County's very own Leafgro® as the compost used for the project!

The program removes the debris and abrasives which collected over the winter months. This keeps drainage systems clean, and reduces the amount of pollutants washing into our local streams and eventually, the Chesapeake Bay.
Weather permitting, this year's cleaning will occur from March 16 through June 30, 2009.
Watch for signs posted in your neighborhood a few days before the sweeping begins. You can also check the Daily Sweep Map.
On the days when your neighborhood streets are being cleaned, help the workers have fewer obstacles in their trucks' paths by:
- finding alternate parking
- setting your recycling and trash containers out of the roadway, if possible, on your collection day

Look at all of those cans of paint, just waiting to be taken for use on an upcoming project! This morning, our "Paint Store" reopened at the Solid Waste Transfer Station. It closes for the winter because freezing temperatures can damage paint. Now that the temperatures are on the rise again, we've restocked the shelves, and organized them by paint type. Come and "shop" - all paint is available at no charge!
All of the paint we (re)offer is usable paint which residents have brought to our Household Hazardous Waste Program for disposal. Rather than throwing it away as waste, we give it back to the community for painting needs large and small.

From today's news release:
"In support of County Executive Isiah Leggett’s public commitment to use state-of-the-art technologies to improve air pollution control at the County’s Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) in Dickerson, the Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced completion of a retrofitting project that has reduced nitrogen oxide (NOx) to about half of the amount designated by regulatory standards.
Previously, the RRF recorded concentrations of about 170 parts per million (ppm), compared to the federal and state daily average limit of 180 ppm. With the newly installed technology, DSWS expects daily average concentrations of NOx to be not more than 110 ppm and 90 ppm on an annual basis."

Excited about last night's Winter Storm Watch, my boys were ready. They had their snow pants out, and their boots lined up.
I was ready, too: I had a laptop and cell phone, fully charged and standing by.
As we saw this morning, neither set of preparations was called into play. Still, it was good practice for a future weekday morning on which snow blankets the ground, or ice makes streets too slippery for recycling and trash collection vehicles.
If County-provided recycling or trash collection needed to be delayed or suspended due to weather on such a morning, I'd press that laptop into service as soon as I received the phone call to let me know that there was a collections change. I would update our website, and send a note to our announcement subscribers. You can receive notifications as email, a text message, or as an RSS feed.
Are you on our subscriber list? If not, I invite you to join our Collection Change notification list (and any of the other lists we offer).

Join millions of Americans nationwide in celebrating America Recycles Day on Saturday, November 15, 2008.
America Recycles Day promotes the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourages more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment through increased recycling.
We are participating on November 15th by hosting events at multiple locations throughout Montgomery County that will offer paper shredding, clothing and household goods donation, and household hazardous waste collection services for Montgomery County residents only; as well as provide information on reducing, reusing, and recycling waste and buying products made with recycled content.
Watch our America Recycles Day webpage for details and updates. Or, call us at 240-777-6400 for more information.
Even if you do not attend one of our County events, consider what you can do to increase your recycling or reduce the amount of waste you generate—every little bit makes a difference!

We continually examine our statistics to help us evaluate our program and facility performance. The end of a Fiscal Year is a good opportunity to step back for a look at the larger picture…
In Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008), our Recycling Center received 97,317 tons of blue bin materials and paper.
Here's how those blue bin materials stacked up by weight:
- Glass: 61.61%
- Plastic: 16.57%
- Aluminum cans and foil: 3.03%
- Steel cans: 6.55%
- Residue (material we cannot accept for recycling): 12.23%
(The numbers don’t quite add up to 100%, due to rounding.)
Want to see the Recycling Center operations for yourself? We welcome Recycling Center tours. We hosted almost 6,000 visitors in Fiscal Year 2008. If you can't come by in person, take our online tour.

When the folks planning the U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR® Recycle My Old Fridge Campaign Art Exhibition needed refrigerator doors earlier this summer, they came to us. Specifically, they turned to our Solid Waste Transfer Station, the facility which receives refrigerators for recycling. And, our Transfer Station staff was happy to assist with their request.
The refrigerator door art has been created, and the show, titled "The Art of Recycling: The Coolest Show in Town", opens this coming Monday! It runs from August 25 through September 2, 2008, at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.
Calculate the amount of energy used by your refrigerator, learn about ENERGY STAR® models, and more at the Recycle My Old Fridge Campaign. If you decide it's time to replace your refrigerator, remember that we provide curbside pickups at no charge through our scrap metal recycling program.

What a warm and sunny day it was for our Earth Day Celebration! While the advance weather forecast included rain, those drops didn't fall until long after our event was over. (Whew!) Thank you to the hundreds of you who came out and joined us.
We are so grateful to our many event volunteers - a good number of whom were teens earning Student Service Learning hours - for your assistance throughout the day.

You have brought tons (literally!) of rechargeable batteries to us for recycling. Thank you!
This afternoon, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) gave us a 2007 “Regional Recycling Leadership Award” for our battery recycling program. Did you know that we received 6,300 pounds of rechargeable batteries in 2006? The estimates for 2007 are even higher. (Read the full news release)
Three other programs were also given 2007 Regional Recycling Leadership Awards from the RBRC: Hennepin County Environmental Services in Minneapolis, the City of Austin (TX) Household Hazardous Waste Management Program and the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Environmental Management Division (NC). Congratulations to all!

As I mentioned yesterday, we'll have an electronics recycling collection at this Celebration.
Do you have confidential papers which you'd like to have shredded? Bring a bag with you -- we'll have a collection point for off-site shredding by The Arc of Montgomery County. (Limit: one bag per person)
Download our Earth Day flyer (designed by one of our volunteers - thanks so much, E.!)

The December 2007 issue of Washingtonian Magazine features its "Best of Washington" ratings. Here's an excerpt of what was written about us:
On most counts, it's easier to be green in Montgomery County than in any of the area's other 13 jurisdictions. It has one of the country's top recycling rates (amount of recyclables collected divided by trash generated), 43 percent, and has strict rules on what must be recycled.
Thanks for the kind words!

We invited you... and you came to help us celebrate America Recycles Day last Saturday! Thank you to all who participated. In addition to the staff who worked on this event, we are grateful to our many volunteers, who collectively contributed hours of time in preparing for and then supporting the event's activities.
Rocco, the Recycling Retriever, greeted visitors enthusiastically, with open arms.

We had bags of Leafgro available to folks who stopped at our display in the Town Square.

A staff member put the finishing touches on a display about recycling at apartments and condominiums.

Children industriously created works of art from a variety of "recycled" items.

Do you know what to recycle in Montgomery County? These two volunteers were ready to quiz event visitors!

From the questions we receive, I know that folks wonder whether it really matters whether they save that can, bottle, or jar for recycling, whether they separate their large metal items for special collection, or whether they make the effort to reduce the amount of waste they generate. Our numbers are in for Fiscal Year 2007, and yes, those seemingly small actions really do matter. In fact, collectively they add up to our having recycled 43.2% of what we in Montgomery County discarded last year. Seen another way, we recycled just over 43 out of every 100 pounds we pitched. Thank you very much for your part in this success! (What's a Fiscal Year? In our case, it is the 12-month time period from July 1 through June 30.)

Here's something I enjoyed doing on our website:
Montgomery County does not recycle televisions.
That's right - our recycling program has just expanded! Montgomery County has a brand-new television recycling program at our Solid Waste Transfer Station.
The television recycling containers are located next to the fenced computer recycling area:

After just a few days of operation, many boxes have already been filled with televisions! The attendants at the Transfer Station are doing a great job of notifying residents of our new program when they spot televisions in the material those folks are unloading.

What's better than recycling books? Reusing them!
We accept books in our curbside recycling program, and in our mixed paper recycling container at our Solid Waste Transfer Station. The books we receive are recycled.
Now, we have two blue cans next to the Transfer Station's mixed paper recycling container. They are labeled "Books to Donate". When you put your paperback and hardback books into these cans, they are reused as books, rather than as paper fiber in our recycling program. The books are picked up by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation. This is a pilot program for us.
For other local book reuse opportunities, check our Use It Again database.

If you've been to the Solid Waste Transfer Station lately, you noticed our big construction project!
Because of this construction, we temporarily moved our scrap metal section. If you enter from the Frederick Road (Route 355) entrance, drive through the recycling drop-off area towards the bulk wood (yard trim) section. At the 3-way intersection, turn left towards the Transfer Station building. The new scrap metal section is in the lower parking lot, next to the Department of Transportation "shed."
Here's a photo of the bulk wood section...

and this is your new (and temporary) scrap metal destination. The Department of Transportation "shed" is the structure on the right side.

Our Vegetable Oil Exchange is now open for use! We are excited about the Exchange, and the opportunity it offers for used vegetable oil to be reused right within our community. The Exchange creates an electronic meeting place for generators of used vegetable oil, and folks who put that oil back into service, often as fuel for their cars. It's an example of turning "trash" to "treasure!" This afternoon, the Exchange was featured on WAMU Radio's "Metro Connection" show. Listen to the Metro Connection archive to hear interviews with some local waste vegetable oil generators and users, and to learn about cars fueled by this oil.
