Did you know that the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station is now home to an array of 1,248 solar panels? The 280 kilowatt system went live last month. It will produce about 30 percent of the facility's energy needs. And, during the 20-year project, the panels are anticipated to produce 6 million kilowatt-hours, or enough energy to power 590 average American homes for one year.
Because the building's roof is flat, you can't see the array from the ground. We've taken a camera up to bring you close-up views of the project. From your computer, you can also look at how much energy the system is producing (and when our location experienced clouds or overcast skies!).
Learn more about our large-scale solar project, including photos and a link to near-real-time system performance monitoring.
This project is a joint effort of
- the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection
- the Maryland Energy Administration
- the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority
- SunEdison
It was partially funded with a $280,000 Project Sunburst grant from the Maryland Energy Administration, with no upfront costs to us.

Tips from the manager of our Solid Waste Transfer Station and Processing Facility...
Dear Tree Limb and Yard Trim Customers:
The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station has been experiencing long lines for you during peak operating hours.
In order to avoid lines please consider the following options:
-
Residential customers: if you just have small material (limb diameter less than 4 inches), please place your yard trim at the curb on your recycling day in bundles weighing less than 45 pounds and less than four feet in length, in brown yard waste bags, or in trash cans with a “Yard Waste” label
-
Residents hauling larger material from your own home: consider coming weekdays before 11:00 a.m. or during the evening between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. If you come on the weekend, traffic is lightest in the morning before about 10:00 a.m. Traffic is heaviest midday between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., so that is a good time to avoid. Following this advice should enable you dump your material with a minimal wait time.

Our Solid Waste Transfer Station has been receiving an extremely large volume of trees limbs that came down during last winter’s snow storms.
If possible, we ask you to make use of the weekly recycling collection for yard trim from your home. See our Storm Cleanup page for preparation instructions.
If you want to deliver the material to the Transfer Station yourself because you have larger tree sections or limbs, please be prepared for the possibility of long lines during peak periods on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Transfer Station has evening hours from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. These hours are lightly used and would assure a quick and efficient drop-off.
Residents may bring in as much natural wood waste / yard trim as they want from their own home. The 500 pound limit for the public drop-off facility only applies to trash.

We will continue to update our website and announcements as we see how the weather forecast for this afternoon and beyond unfolds.
Recycling and Trash Collection Status
The collection status update for Montgomery County-provided recycling and trash collections for today, Tuesday, February 9, 2010, is:
- Trash collection only.
- We will be working on routes normally serviced on Mondays and Tuesdays. All trash items must be at the curb for pickup.
- No recycling collection for the remainder of the week.
- We have canceled all recycling and yard trim pickups.
(Yesterday, we had planned to "slide" all collection days this week. Because of current road conditions on neighborhood streets and the additional snow in the weather forecast, we have canceled the slide.)
Solid Waste Transfer Station
The Shady Grove Transfer Station plans to be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, with no evening hours.
If site conditions deteriorate and the site roads and drop-off areas areas become slick, we may close the Transfer Station earlier.

Recently, my phone rang. My Solid Waste Transfer Station colleague, Ray, was on the other end.
"Today, we had someone in here looking for a diamond watch and ring. Maybe this would be something for the blog..."
Indeed it is! Part of the daily Transfer Station operations includes keeping the various dropoff areas humming, and the trucks unloading. Generally, the material that's brought in is intended to stay there. However, sometimes, valuables mistakenly end up in the trash. When this happens, our Transfer Station staff springs into action.
On that day, it was jewelry that had accidently ended up in the wrong place.
Thankfully, the trash collection truck which serviced the resident's home had not yet come to the Transfer Station to unload. When it arrived, staff pulled it aside, and had the driver unload in a separate area. (If the truck had already unloaded when the resident contacted us, it would have been too late to attempt to find the items.)
We contacted the resident, who then came to begin the hunt for the bag which held the missing items. We provided safety equipment, and assisted as much as possible. This can be very challenging work, especially if the sought-for things are small.
Was there a happy ending? The missing bag was recovered! We were ready to celebrate! However, it turned out that the jewelry was not in the bag after all. The story did ultimately end in victory: the resident called us later to share that the missing items were found behind the dresser. Hooray!
What should you do if you discover that an item of monetary or sentimental value has been whisked away as trash? We've taken this particular jewelry situation as inspiration to jot down the procedure for how to (possibly) recover a valuable item from the trash.

Yesterday, I had an email exchange with a County resident interested in participating in this Sunday's Household Hazardous Waste collection event in Silver Spring. He lives in Rockville, and wanted driving directions.
I was happy to provide the directions. Given his Rockville location, I also gave him information about the Hazardous Waste drop-off point we have at the Solid Waste Transfer Station, which is available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The resident replied:
I thought they only take hazmats on days they announce.
Not anymore! Thanks for the opportunity to clarify this information. We are pleased to have a permanent Hazardous Waste facility at the Transfer Station, making drop-off convenient any day of the week. And, there's an added bonus to using the Transfer Station drop-off: if you have any paint needs, take a few minutes to "shop" in the "Paint Store" we have there. The selection changes all the time, but the "price" does not! Choose from primers, interior paint, exterior paint and related products in a range of colors and finishes, all available at no charge to you.

What happens to our Christmas trees after they are whisked away from the curb by a yard trim recycling truck?
The trees are taken to the Solid Waste Transfer Station, where they are unloaded in the yard trim area. Then, they are ground up into mulch. (This is why we ask you to remove all of the decorations -- they would become "contaminants" in the mulching process.) This Christmas tree mulch has a high quality. And, it smells wonderful! Get it while you can -- this special "recipe" is available only at this time of the year.
Our mulch is available at no charge at our Neighborhood Mulch Preserves.
And, if you find yourself driving past the Transfer Station, do roll down your window for a little of that pine fragrance...

The refrigerator door art has been created, and the show, titled "The Art of Recycling: The Coolest Show in Town", opens this coming Monday! It runs from August 25 through September 2, 2008, at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.

You have brought tons (literally!) of rechargeable batteries to us for recycling. Thank you!
This afternoon, the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) gave us a 2007 “Regional Recycling Leadership Award” for our battery recycling program. Did you know that we received 6,300 pounds of rechargeable batteries in 2006? The estimates for 2007 are even higher. (Read the full news release)
Three other programs were also given 2007 Regional Recycling Leadership Awards from the RBRC: Hennepin County Environmental Services in Minneapolis, the City of Austin (TX) Household Hazardous Waste Management Program and the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Environmental Management Division (NC). A dispatch from one of our Solid Waste Transfer Station inspectors:
This morning, Saturday, March 8, 2008, around 10:30 a.m., I received a call on the radio from the car ramp [the trash bays in the public unloading area]. A citizen reported hearing a cat meowing in the number 13 trailer. We had the trailer pulled to the tipping floor [inside the Transfer Station building] and [our contractor's employee and supervisor] climbed in and emptied most of this trailer by hand.
[Searching the trailer]

[The search continued, with the trash now on the Transfer Station floor.]

They searched through the trash for about 35 minutes without finding a cat. With most hope gone at this point, the car ramp called to us and reported that the cat was still meowing near trailer bay 13. We went back to the trailer area but to no avail -- no cat was found.
We all went back to work, feeling that the cat was lost. Then around 1:00 p.m., [the employee] called me back to the [public unloading] area. To my surprise, there he stood, with a kitten in his hands. He didn’t give up and kept looking and found the kitten hidden in the trailer bay. He has volunteered to give the kitten a home.

Update from March 11: the kitten has been named Lucky, and is doing well in its new home!

What happens to your Christmas tree after it is whisked away from your curb for recycling?
Yard trim trucks carrying leaves, grass, and brush -- and Christmas trees! -- enter the Solid Waste Transfer Station through its Truck Entrance.

After weighing in on the scales, the trucks head over to the Yard Trim area.

Look at that big pile of yard trim and trees! See those paper yard trim bags? They will be ground up right along with their contents.

Here is the grinder at work.

The pile of yard trim and trees is in the foreground of this photo; the resulting mulch pile is in the background. With the remainder of the autumn leaves, and now the Christmas trees, in the mix, January and February are excellent times to come and take home some of our mulch.

From our mailbag:
How do I dispose of an old console television?
We checked with our Transfer Station colleagues to see whether it would be accepted there for recycling. And, the answer is... yes, console televisions are accepted for recycling in our new television recycling program.
If you cannot transport the console television to the Transfer Station, and if you receive Montgomery County-provided trash service, then you may request a curbside bulk trash collection for this item. The tradeoff is that while the television would be collected at your curb, it would not be recycled.
Thanks for asking! Confirming the answer gave our Call Center staff and me the opportunity to expand our own knowledge. And, as a result of your question, I have updated our television page to include console televisions. So, dear readers, keep your questions coming!

Pardon our dust as we stir up a little more than usual!
Our Solid Waste Transfer Station expansion project is humming along. We are adding a new wing to our tipping floor (that's where the trucks, well, tip out their contents). The addition is on the side of the building facing Frederick Road.
Here are some photos of the project's progress:

From our mailbag:
I have a bunch of bed pillows that have seen better days. I don't want to Freecycle, but was wondering where to recycle them. They are not terrible but, not hygienic enough to pass along
Thanks for your question, P.!
I put the question to the manager of our clothing and textile recycling program. We are able to accept only pillows which are new, and in a bag. So, please dispose of your used pillows in your household trash.
Do you know of other options for used pillows? Please let me know about them!

Here's something I enjoyed doing on our website:
Montgomery County does not recycle televisions.
That's right - our recycling program has just expanded! Montgomery County has a brand-new television recycling program at our Solid Waste Transfer Station.
The television recycling containers are located next to the fenced computer recycling area:

After just a few days of operation, many boxes have already been filled with televisions! The attendants at the Transfer Station are doing a great job of notifying residents of our new program when they spot televisions in the material those folks are unloading.

What's better than recycling books? Reusing them!
We accept books in our curbside recycling program, and in our mixed paper recycling container at our Solid Waste Transfer Station. The books we receive are recycled.
Now, we have two blue cans next to the Transfer Station's mixed paper recycling container. They are labeled "Books to Donate". When you put your paperback and hardback books into these cans, they are reused as books, rather than as paper fiber in our recycling program. The books are picked up by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation. This is a pilot program for us.
For other local book reuse opportunities, check our Use It Again database.

If you've been to the Solid Waste Transfer Station lately, you noticed our big construction project!
Because of this construction, we temporarily moved our scrap metal section. If you enter from the Frederick Road (Route 355) entrance, drive through the recycling drop-off area towards the bulk wood (yard trim) section. At the 3-way intersection, turn left towards the Transfer Station building. The new scrap metal section is in the lower parking lot, next to the Department of Transportation "shed."
Here's a photo of the bulk wood section...

and this is your new (and temporary) scrap metal destination. The Department of Transportation "shed" is the structure on the right side.

If you bring materials to the Shady Grove Transfer Station in a commercial van or a vehicle with truck tags, you must use the Truck Entrance on Shady Grove Road. (We have additional detail in our Public Unloading Facility Regulations.)
Why? This entrance has vehicle scales, which allow us to weigh the amount of material you bring in.
The Truck Entrance is open Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Careful -- it is not open on Sundays!
To help you know when to turn into the Transfer Station, here is a street view of the entrance sign from Shady Grove Road. (This photo gives you the west-bound view, as you head towards the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Frederick Road.)

Continuing our discussion about recycling electronic items...
Sorry, we do not provide curbside recycling collection for computers and related electronic items.
BUT - if you are able to bring them to our Computer Recycling drop-off at the Shady Grove Transfer Station, great things happen! Most of the computers and related equipment we receive are recycled -- 100%!
The items which are not recycled are... reused, which is even better! Volunteers from a local nonprofit computer user organization wipe the hard drives clean, refurbish, and then donate the items they select from our drop-off program.
As you enter the Transfer Station's recycling area, the computer drop-off is on your right. Here's what you'll see:
Please place your computer equipment into one of the large cubic yard cardboard boxes.
See you at the Transfer Station!

"Knowing how to find the Solid Waste Transfer Station is nice, but... I've got items I want to RECYCLE!"
Super! We love folks who want to recycle as much as possible!
Did you know that our recycling drop-off area is actually behind the Transfer Station? There, we accept recyclable paper, plastic, cans, bottles, jars, clothing and textiles, computers and computer-related electronic items, and more! The Transfer Station's hours of operation apply.
So, where is the Recycling Center?
It's located right next to the Solid Waste Transfer Station:
16105 Frederick Rd Derwood, MD 20855
(Both the Transfer Station and the Recycling Center share the same entrance from Frederick Road.)
The Recycling Center welcomes visitors for weekday tours and self-guided visits!
Sunday, August 26, 2007
Our Recycling Center and Solid Waste Transfer Station are located right next to each other. They are just south of the intersection of Frederick Road (Route 355) and Shady Grove Road.

From our mailbag: Would you please inform me of the options for disposing of a riding mower. Sure! We accept riding mowers at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. However, you must transport the mower there yourself. Drain any remaining oil and fuel from the mower. Then, bring it to the scrap metal recycling area at the Transfer Station. Montgomery County residents are welcome to take trash from their homes to the Shady Grove Transfer Station. When you do this, please remember to watch your (load) weight. Residential trash loads must be under 500 pounds.
What if your trash load weighs more?
If your load exceeds this amount, we can accept it Monday through Saturday via the Truck Entrance on Shady Grove Road (it is closed on Sundays). This entrance has vehicle scales to measure your load weight. The fee schedule applies to loads 500 pounds and more, and is prorated for the actual weight of your trash.

From our mailbag:
A few months ago, there were a couple of cans labeled "shoes" near the clothing recycling trailer. They are no longer there. I have continued bagging old shoes and placing them in the trailer. Now, I am wondering if you still accept shoes? What about leather purses? Is it correct to put these in the trailer?
Thanks for your questions, L.
Yes, we continue to accept shoes and purses in our Clothing and Textiles container at the Shady Grove Transfer Station. Please keep shoes in pairs, and put all of your items into a plastic bag to help keep them clean and dry. They will be reused or recycled, depending on their condition.
What happened to the separate shoe cans you saw a few months ago? We were working with an organization that collected only shoes. They shipped the shoes to Honduras. Students there are required to have shoes to go to school. So, the shoes you contributed to this project helped enable children to attend classes.
