County to Recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, Montgomery County Councilmember Phil Andrews, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger and Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Chief of Aging and Disability Services John J. Kenney will welcome attendees to the County’s third annual observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

There are nearly six million reported cases of elder physical and/or financial abuse every year in the United States, but the majority of those cases go unreported. Montgomery County has formed an Elder/Vulnerable Adult Abuse Task Force to address those concerns for the County’s more than 125,000 senior residents and their families.

County to Recognize Outstanding Achievements in Recycling

County Executive Ike Leggett will present remarks and Jonathan Powers, Federal Environmental Executive, will give the keynote address. Appointed to his position by President Obama, Powers is responsible for promoting environmental and energy sustainability across federal government operations.

Fifty businesses, organizations and employees, 21 multi-family properties, property managers and staff, and residents will be honored in the following categories: excellence in recycling for businesses and multi-family properties which recycled more than 70 percent of their waste generated in 2012, and outstanding achievement for those businesses, employees, property owners/managers, and multi-family properties, staff and residents for their contributions to successful recycling, waste reduction, buying recycled and educational efforts.

Leggett, Tammy Darvish to Help Honor County Small Businesses at Inaugural Small Business Awards Luncheon

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join with keynote luncheon speaker Tammy Darvish, Executive Vice President of DARCARS Automotive Group; Steve Silverman, Director, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development (DED); and more than 300 members of the County’s business community to honor and celebrate winners in eight award categories at the inaugural Montgomery County Small Business Awards Luncheon.

The categories are: (1) Bioscience Company of the Year; (2) Information Technology Company of the Year; (3) Montgomery County Innovation Network Company of the Year; (4) Small Business Award (1-10 Employees); (5) Small Business Award (11-50 Employees); (6) Small Business Award (51-200 Employees); (7) Start-up Business of the Year; and (8) Workforce Award.

County Announces Events for 2013 "Recycling Awareness Week"

SCHOOL RECYCLING ASSEMBLIES

The “Magic of Recycling” show, an interactive educational program on recycling and saving natural resources, will be presented to students in a number of private schools located in the County. Each school selected was identified by Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) staff for their outstanding recycling efforts. The program will motivate and educate students and school employees to participate in the County’s recycling program at school and at home.

Leggett to Join Governor O’Malley for Transportation Bill Signing

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. and Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch at the bill signing for the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013. Leggett has been an outspoken advocate for an increase in the state’s gasoline tax, which hadn’t been increased since 1992.

The Act increases revenues from the sale of gasoline for the first time in a generation. Revenue from the bill is estimated at $4.4 billion over the next six years that will be dedicated to new roads and mass transit projects, boosting economic development in the County.

Leggett to Launch Green Landscape Business Certification Program

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will launch the County’s newest effort to encourage businesses and residents to “go green” through actions on their property that enhance the County’s environmental goals.

The Green Landscape Business Certification Program expands eligibility for the Green Business Certification Program beyond businesses with office-based operations to the landscaping sector. The certified companies help property owners reduce or eliminate pesticides and fertilizers; plant native canopy trees; install rain gardens to capture and filter stormwater; create conservation landscapes; reduce areas needing mowing to cut emissions; and conserve water.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, State Comptroller Peter Franchot and County Council President Nancy Navarro will present awards to nine honorees at the Second Annual Montgomery Serves event.

Odessa Shannon, Carol Trawick and Teresa Rios Wright were selected as recipients of the Roscoe R. Nix Distinguished Community Leadership Award. The award honors an individual or individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the quality of our community.

The Neal Potter Path of Achievement Award honors seniors age 60 and older who have given a lifetime of volunteer community service. Representatives from the Commission on Aging chose Marcine D. Goodloe and Joyce B. Siegel as recipients.

Leggett to Join Conservation Montgomery for National Arbor Day Tree Planting

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will celebrate National Arbor Day with a tree planting at the Bethesda Library. The event was initiated by Arlene Bruhn, Conservation Montgomery board member. The Bethesda Garden Club will provide valuable assistance by watering the newly planted trees. Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school students have been invited to support the watering effort during the hot summer months.

Leggett will take the opportunity to encourage the County Council to pass his Bill 35-12, the Trees and Tree Canopy Conservation Law. The bill proposes a way to fund replacement of trees lost to development.

Joining Leggett will be Montgomery County Councilmember Roger Berliner.

Leggett to Help Distribute Food to Manna Food Center Clients *****Photo Opportunity*****

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Manna Food Center Executive Director Minerva Delgado in urging residents to make donations to the Ride On bus system’s annual “Give and Ride” program, which will be held this year April 28 through May 4. Manna feeds 3,600 hungry families a month.

Everyone in the County can participate in the food drive. Ride On passengers get a free ride in exchange for a non-perishable food item or children’s item. Others can participate in the food drive by giving their donations to any Ride On bus driver or by sending contributions directly to Manna. Disposable diapers, formula, baby or toddler food and juice are especially useful to families in need.

Photo Opportunity: Leggett will help distribute food to Manna clients. A Ride On bus with a food collection bag and promotional Give and Ride poster will be at Manna.
