Leggett, Andrews Join Project Search Montgomery Interns for First Graduation

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Council Member Phil Andrews will join the 12 Project Search Montgomery interns at their graduation ceremony. This is Montgomery County’s first class of Project Search interns.

Project Search Montgomery provides opportunities for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program targets individuals whose main goal is competitive employment and those who will benefit from an extensive period of training, long-term job coaching and continuous feedback from teachers, job coaches and employers.

Leggett to Participate in Celebration for Caribbean American Heritage Month

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join the Caribbean American Advisory Board and members of the community to celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month. The celebration will feature Caribbean-themed music and food.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Accessing Montgomery County Services & Resources: Health, Education & Housing.” A panel discussion around the theme is planned featuring Housing Opportunities Commission Director Stacy Spann, Montgomery County Public Schools Chief Engagement and Partnership Officer Tim Warner and Department of Health and Human Services Director of the Office of Community Services Betty Lam.

Montgomery County Council Vice President Craig Rice will join Montgomery County Recreation, Montgomery Parks and Montgomery County Public Schools representatives to kick off the County’s new outreach campaign, “Be Active Montgomery!”, aimed at promoting overall health and wellness through participation in healthy recreation and leisure activities.

The free event includes activities for all ages and features the United Way Fun, Fly and Fit obstacle course; healthy-food vendors; fitness walks; and interactive demonstrations such as Quick Start tennis, Zumba and golf clinics.

Leggett, Councilmember Andrews and School Board Member Chris Barclay to Celebrate County’s Recognition as “One of America’s Best Intergenerational Communities”

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will be joined by County Councilmember Phil Andrews and Montgomery County School Board Member Christopher Barclay to accept a flag and certificate recognizing Montgomery County as on of the 2013 MetLife Foundation/Generations United “America’s Best Intergenerational Community Award” recipients.

The award will be presented by Donna Butts, executive director of Generations United. Montgomery County was honored, along with Dunedin, Florida; Itta Bena, Mississippi and Westchester County, New York as being an outstanding place to live for people of all ages.

The County was recognized in March at a ceremony on Capitol Hill attended by Congressman Chris VanHollen

County to Recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, Montgomery County Councilmember Phil Andrews, Police Chief J. Thomas Manger and Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Chief of Aging and Disability Services John J. Kenney will welcome attendees to the County’s third annual observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

There are nearly six million reported cases of elder physical and/or financial abuse every year in the United States, but the majority of those cases go unreported. Montgomery County has formed an Elder/Vulnerable Adult Abuse Task Force to address those concerns for the County’s more than 125,000 senior residents and their families.

County to Recognize Outstanding Achievements in Recycling

County Executive Ike Leggett will present remarks and Jonathan Powers, Federal Environmental Executive, will give the keynote address. Appointed to his position by President Obama, Powers is responsible for promoting environmental and energy sustainability across federal government operations.

Fifty businesses, organizations and employees, 21 multi-family properties, property managers and staff, and residents will be honored in the following categories: excellence in recycling for businesses and multi-family properties which recycled more than 70 percent of their waste generated in 2012, and outstanding achievement for those businesses, employees, property owners/managers, and multi-family properties, staff and residents for their contributions to successful recycling, waste reduction, buying recycled and educational efforts.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join with keynote luncheon speaker Tammy Darvish, Executive Vice President of DARCARS Automotive Group; Steve Silverman, Director, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development (DED); and more than 300 members of the County’s business community to honor and celebrate winners in eight award categories at the inaugural Montgomery County Small Business Awards Luncheon.

SCHOOL RECYCLING ASSEMBLIES

The “Magic of Recycling” show, an interactive educational program on recycling and saving natural resources, will be presented to students in a number of private schools located in the County. Each school selected was identified by Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) staff for their outstanding recycling efforts. The program will motivate and educate students and school employees to participate in the County’s recycling program at school and at home.

Leggett to Join Governor O’Malley for Transportation Bill Signing

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. and Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch at the bill signing for the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013. Leggett has been an outspoken advocate for an increase in the state’s gasoline tax, which hadn’t been increased since 1992.

The Act increases revenues from the sale of gasoline for the first time in a generation. Revenue from the bill is estimated at $4.4 billion over the next six years that will be dedicated to new roads and mass transit projects, boosting economic development in the County.
