Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Section continue to investigate yesterday evening’s the fatal collision in the Briggs Chaney Woods community of Silver Spring.
At approximately 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, 3rd District officers and fire/rescue units were called to the area of Briggs Chaney Road near Gentry Ridge Court for the report of a personal injury collision. The resulting investigation determined that a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Stevie Reed, Jr., age 22, of the 4900 block of Buena Vista Drive in Dumfries, Virginia, was traveling northbound on Briggs Chaney Road at a constant speed. For unknown reasons, he lost control and crossed over the center lines into the southbound lanes of Briggs Chaney Road. The Cavalier collided with a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue driven by Cynthia Mary Rusten, age 46, of the 1100 block of Sandy Hollow Court in Silver Spring.
Stevie Reed, Jr. died from injuries he sustained in the collision. Ms. Rusten was taken to the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center for treatment of her serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. A 7-year-old male passenger in the Intrigue was not injured.
The collision remains under investigation. As is standard procedure, any charges will be determined by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office after the investigation has been completed by the police department.
