Leggett and Council to Join Building Industry Leaders and Commission on People with Disabilities to Launch Design for Life Montgomery Program

Program will Certify New Homes and Renovations Aimed at Increasing Visit-Ability and Live-Ability

Monday, March 12, 2007; 12;30 p.m.

Winchester Homes Model, 12812 Grand Elm Street, Clarksburg

County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Councilmember George Leventhal will join officials from the Maryland-National Capital Building Association, members of the County’s Commission on People with Disabilities and officials with the County’s Department of Permitting Services to launch the County’s new voluntary certification program for builders of new homes and those renovating existing homes. The guidelines for “live-ability” and “visit-ability” incorporate design features such as a no step entrance -- making it easier and safer to bring in a baby stroller, move in large furniture, accommodate a person living with a temporary or permanent disability, accommodate friends or relatives who have mobility limitations, and ultimately help people age in place.

Note to editors: Visuals will be available of Winchester Homes models that incorporate universal design features, along with b-roll of a home that incorporates accessible design features.

Directions: Take 270 North to Exit 18- Route 121. Go North on Rt. 121 and continue across Rt. 355. Turn right on Rainbow Arch Drive (approximately .7 miles after intersection with 355) and right on Grand Elm Street. Model home is on the right.
