Leggett Introduces New “Respect the Space” Educational Campaign for Reserved Accessible Parking in the County

Chief Manger Announces Enforcement

Monday, November 21, 2011; 1:00 p.m.

Outside Parking Lot at Westfield Montgomery Shopping Center
7101 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda
(Between the entrances to California Pizza Kitchen and Legal Seafood restaurants)

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, County Council Vice President Roger Berliner, Police Chief Tom Manger, Director of the MCPD Traffic Division Captain Tom Didone, and the Administrator for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration John Kuo provide information about the County’s new initiative on reserved accessible parking. Dr. Seth Morgan and Ms. Trish Gallalee from the County’s Commission on People with Disabilities will provide their personal experiences with this issue.

This new five-point program entitled, “Respect the Space,” is designed to publicize the problems associated with accessible parking, determine which parking lots in the County are not in conformance with State and Federal standards, inform those property owners of the standards they must meet, and enforce the space and signage standards, as well as the proper and legal use of parking placards and disabled license plates.

On Friday, November 25, we begin the busiest shopping season of the year. Shoppers are often harried and challenged to find parking spaces. This is exactly the time we need to alert drivers about the importance of not being tempted to park illegally in reserved accessible spaces…even for just a minute!

Directions: Enter the shopping center from the main entrance on Democracy Boulevard. Make a right turn and follow the Ring Road. Make a left turn at the sign listing Crate and Barrel pick-ups, California Pizza Kitchen, and Legal Seafood. Drive through the covered parking. The media event will be held on the sidewalk between the outside entrances to the restaurants. Additional parking information will be provided to accommodate microwave trucks.
