County Executive Isiah Leggett and Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz will attend the second annual Homeless Resource Day to observe first-hand the variety of programs and services offered for residents experiencing homelessness. More than 30 organizations will offer a range of resources, including free medical screenings, eye exams, legal services, financial counseling, tax assistance, substance abuse and mental health counseling and social services. Last year’s Resource Day attracted more than 600 attendees.
In addition, free haircuts and manicures will be offered and attendees can learn about shelter resources and apply for Motor Vehicle Administration identification cards. Transportation will be provided from the Bethesda, Rockville, Shady Grove and Silver Spring metro stations. Bi-lingual guides and sign language interpreters will be available to assist attendees.
During the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments one day enumeration of the homeless population in January 2012, there were 982 homeless individuals counted in Montgomery County.
