Leggett to Kick Off County's Celebration of African Heritage Month in September; Free Event Open to Public

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett will kick off African Heritage Month on Tuesday, September 3 with a celebration at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place, at 6 p.m.

The free annual event will include a reception hosted by members of the Montgomery County African Affairs Advisory Group, musical entertainment and African cuisine. During the reception, Leggett will honor leaders from various walks of life for their contributions to the African Diaspora. In 2008, Montgomery County became the first jurisdiction in the country to proclaim the month of September as African Heritage Month. This year also marks the 50th anniversary celebration of the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

Wednesday, September 18, 6 p.m. – Diaspora Town Hall with the President of Sierra Leone, West Africa. The Sierra Leone Embassy, in collaboration with the African Affairs Advisory Group, will host His Excellency Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place.; and

Saturday, September 21, 1 to 9 p.m. – Pan African Cultural Festival (PANAFEST) at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place. Call Bonie or Ada at 410-428-6402.
