The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is now posting service opportunities for Community Service Week, October 20 – 27. The week of volunteer activities highlights the 27th annual Community Service Day on the 26th. Sponsored by the Fund for Montgomery and its supporters, Community Service Day takes place each year on the fourth Saturday in October, but projects are planned throughout the preceding week. Montgomery County’s World of Montgomery festival on Sunday, October 20 will kick off this year’s Community Service Day activities.
Nonprofit organizations, businesses and faith, service and social groups, along with County government departments are encouraged to host volunteer service projects during this week. Projects open to volunteers can be posted to the Volunteer Center website, where residents can then register to participate in service activities. Examples of service projects include holding a winter coat drive, organizing a clothes closet for the needy, putting a community garden to bed and visiting seniors at assisted living homes. Projects are posted on the Volunteer Center website at www.montgomeryserves.org.
Community Service Day provides organizations with both the opportunity to introduce residents to their missions and programs and the manpower to complete a needed task or a wish list activity. Members of the community can get out and make a difference with a one-day project and learn more about volunteering year-round.
“Community Service Day is part of what makes Montgomery County such a special place to live,” said County Executive Ike Leggett. “I urge residents from across the County to join together, roll up their sleeves and work to help our neighbors in need and to enhance our community.”
Projects will continue to be added to the site until October 26, so volunteers are encouraged to check back frequently to view new postings. Most of the listed opportunities provide Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
Montgomery County promotes service year-round at events that include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January and Earth Day which includes activities throughout the month of April. Ongoing and one-time opportunities can be found at www.montgomeryserves.org.
