Leggett Calls for Legislation to Address Issue of Equal Pay for Equal Work

County Executive Isiah Leggett today joined President Obama’s call for equal pay for equal work through “National Equal Pay Day" and will immediately have legislation drafted to require that all County contractors file data with the County government showing how they compensate employees, including by gender and race. The proposed legislation would also prohibit companies from retaliating against workers who discuss their salaries with one another.

“Today is Equal Pay Day,” said Leggett. “Women deserve the same pay as their male colleagues in the workplace. The pay gap has not budged in a decade, according to a report by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Today, full-time working women still earn only 77 percent of what men are paid. I will do whatever I can to budge that number in Montgomery County.”

Requiring disclosure of information on how County contractors compensate their employees, and ensuring that workers who work for County contractors may discuss their salaries with each other, Leggett aims to address the “pay secrecy” that often keeps workers from seeking more equitable compensation.

According to the AAUW report, the gender pay gap affects all women, but the pay shortfall is worse for black and Hispanic women. Asian American women’s salaries show the smallest gender pay gap, at 87 percent of white men’s earnings; Hispanic women’s salaries show the largest gap, at 53 percent of white men’s earnings.

“Equal Pay affects more than just women,” said Leggett. “It affects each Montgomery County family that depends on a woman’s paycheck. Equal pay for equal work is fair. It is equitable, and anyone who does business with our County should strive for pay equity.”
