County Executive Ike Leggett Celebrates 100th Show of "Montgomery al Dia" -- Montgomery County's Award-winning Spanish Language Radio Show

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett is the featured guest on the 100th show of the County’s Award Winning Spanish Language Radio Show “Montgomery al Día” (Montgomery Today) on WACA 1540AM Radio América.

The show will air Tuesday, April 8, from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Leggett will talk about the show’s impact as an ongoing tool to inform the County’s fast growing Hispanic community. The half-hour weekly radio show was launched on April 3, 2012, by the County’s Office of Public Information (PIO) to extend information about County programs and services.

The format includes interviews, news, PSAs, and public call-ins. County government departments, County Council, and other County agencies have collaborated to bring guests, news, and information to the Hispanic community.

Since its launch, the show has hosted more than 80 guests and has addressed issues regarding education, health care, transportation, public safety, economic development, employment, senior services, recycling, consumer protection, pedestrian safety, community engagement, volunteering and recreation. The show has served the Hispanic community in opening the doors of opportunity for families to engage in civic participation, have more access to County programs and services, to be prepared for weather related emergencies and to be informed about law and legislation.

“Montgomery al Día” received the 2013 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award as an innovative program that implemented civic education and public information.

The show is hosted by PIO’s Lorna Virgili, a 24-year veteran Spanish language broadcast journalist.

The show also has a television component. “Montgomery al Día” is recorded live-on-tape at the Radio América studios and broadcast every week on County Cable Montgomery; Channel 6 for Comcast and RCN subscribers; Channel 30 for Verizon subscribers. The TV component is archived and also available for viewing on demand at http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=montgomery+al+dia.

The show is broadcast from the Radio América studios at 2730 University Boulevard in Wheaton and is also streamed live on www.radioamerica.net.
