Following up on a plan introduced by County Executive Isiah Leggett, legislation to establish a Commission on Veteran’s Affairs will be introduced at tomorrow’s County Council meeting. Bill 23-08, Commission on Veterans Affairs, is sponsored by County Council President Mike Knapp. A public hearing on the legislation is tentatively scheduled for July 8 at 1:30 p.m.
“There are approximately 60,000 veterans who call Montgomery County home and we are thankful for their service to our nation,” said Leggett, a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. “The commission is a way to hear from these men and women and their families about how we can prepare for their return and welcome them back to the community. I urge the Council to pass the legislation creating the commission.”
“I am thrilled that Montgomery County is leading the state in establishing a Veterans Commission charged with identifying the needs, resources, and opportunities for our veterans that will help to meet our veterans’ needs and improve the quality of their lives,” said Lorrie Knight-Major, mother of injured Iraqi War veteran Sgt. Ryan Major.
