Montgomery to Receive National Recognition for its Technology Solutions and Innovation

The Public Technology Institute (PTI) will honor Montgomery County’s Department of Technology Services at its 2009 Technology Solutions and Innovations Conference and Exposition, May 12-14 in San Diego, California.

Montgomery County will receive two prestigious Technology Solutions Awards at the awards ceremony. The first award, in the Web and E-Government category, will be presented to the County for its program, “Estimated Tax Calculator.” The second award, in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) category, will be presented for the program, “It Happened Here: GIS Data as Demonstrative Evidence.”

The Estimated Tax Calculator is a free on-line tool that provides potential homebuyers an estimate of what the actual property tax bill will be in the first full year after purchase of a home. The Calculator may be accessed on the County’s website at the following link: In the GIS award category, Montgomery County was recognized for its innovative use of technology to provide maps and aerial photography to assist the State’s Attorney’s Office during both trial and grand jury investigations.

“We are pleased to be recognized by Public Technology Institute for innovation awards,” said E. Steven Emanuel, Chief Information Officer for Montgomery County. “This continues to be a result of working with County departments and placing our focus on delivering solutions that generate results. In severe economic times, producing world class applications continues to emphasize the need for technology to deliver more than ever.”

PTI is a national technology organization created by and for cities and counties. The organization identifies opportunities for technology research, shares best practices, offers consultancies and pilot demonstrations, and promotes technology development initiatives. Every year, PTI recognizes local government technology programs that have demonstrated how, through the use of technology, governments improve service delivery and/or reduce costs.

An independent panel of judges identified the winners of PTI’s 2008-2009 Technology Solutions Awards. “Our members continue to push the boundaries of innovation despite the economic environment,” said PTI Executive Director Alan Shark.
