In celebration of National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is hosting a variety of programs in branches around the County.
In June 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. The MCPL programs range from author discussions to live musical and dance programs and storytelling.
Programs will be held according to the following schedule:
Saturday, June 5 – National Caribbean-American Heritage Month kickoff celebration. Wheaton Library, 11701 Georgia Ave. Noon to 4 p.m. Meet artist Jenne Glover at noon; Panamanian cultural dance and music at 12:30 p.m.; visual art and slide presentation on art and music, 1 p.m.; and meet author, storyteller and folklorist Gerald Hausman, 2 p.m. Hausman co-wrote “The Boy from Nine Mile” with Cedella Marley, daughter of Bob Marley. Tuesday, June 8 – Caribbean culture presented by Dr. Ronald Williams, author of “Four Saints and an Angel.” Twinbrook Library, 202 Meadow Hall Rd., Rockville. 6:30 p.m. Program funded by Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, Inc. Call 240-777-0240.
Saturday, June 12 – Caribbean dances, poetry and dramatic expressions by Caribbean Dance traditions, Takion the Martyr and Carivision Community Theatre. Silver Spring Library, 8901 Colesville Rd. Program funded by Friends of the Library, Montgomery County., Inc. 1-3 p.m. Call 240-773-9420.
Saturday, June 19 – Live Caribbean music featuring Sweet Lime & Passion with David Boothman. Aspen Hill Library, 4407 Aspen Hill Rd., Rockville. 1-2 p.m. Sponsored by Friends of the Library, Aspen Hill Chapter. Call 240-773-9410.
