Neediest Kids Golf Championship Announces Three-Year Agreement with TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

The "Neediest Kids Championship presented by Under Armour" signed a three-year agreement with TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm for their annual golf tournament. This year’s tournament will be played the week of October 1 - 7. The announcement was made this week at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm by Tournament Director Tom Sodeman, Nationwide Tour President Bill Calfee, Neediest Kids President and CEO Amy Ginsburg, Montgomery County Department of Economic Development Director Steve Silverman and former University of Maryland basketball coach and tournament host Gary Williams, among others. The Championship has a three-year agreement with Avenel Farm.

“The Nationwide Tour welcomes Neediest Kids to the family of PGA TOUR host organizations,” said Calfee. “With Neediest Kids and the TOUR’s TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, plus the support of Under Armour, we think we have a very solid foundation in place to grow the Nationwide Tour’s presence and impact in the Washington, D.C. area.”

"We look forward to introducing Neediest Kids and their incredible story and sharing with everyone more information about this exciting new relationship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm," said Sodeman.

Neediest Kids is a nonprofit organization that helps low-income students in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia gain increased confidence, dignity and self-esteem by assuring they receive the basic essentials they need so they can get the education they deserve.

“There are a significant amount of at-risk children in this region who need and cannot afford such basics as eyeglasses, coats, clothing, shoes, school supplies, uniforms, groceries, toiletries, and other basic necessities,” said Ginsburg. “By hosting this tournament we hope to raise our organization’s profile, create awareness around the challenges at-risk kids face, and ultimately, help more children succeed in school.”

Both Gary Williams and Fred Funk are returning – Williams as tournament host and Funk as honorary chairman. The tournament will once again be broadcast for the sixth straight year by the Golf Channel in the United States and seen in 176 countries and territories worldwide.

“Montgomery County is happy to host this important event that gives so much to those in most need throughout our community,” said Kelly Groff, executive director of the Conference and Visitors Bureau of Montgomery County Maryland. “We look forward to hosting the players, their families and all those who will attend this great event from around the region.”

“After hosting the U.S. Open last June, and several previous PGA TOUR events both at Congressional Country Club and TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, Montgomery County stands ready to help make the ‘Neediest Kids Championship presented by Under Armour’ another hugely successful professional golf event,” said Silverman. “We look forward to doing all we can to help support this great cause.”

The newly renovated 220-acre TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm has previously hosted the PGA TOUR (1987-2006) and Champions Tour (2010). The Potomac, Maryland facility becomes only the second TPC facility to host all three tours that are under the umbrella of the PGA TOUR.
