Montgomery County Recreation and M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks Offer Diverse Line-up of Summer Camps

Montgomery County Recreation and M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, have announced a diverse array of camps for summer 2012, featuring everything from aquatics, ice skating, tennis and theatre to overnight nature camps, robotics and golf, among many other options. Camps are available for tots to teens—all skill levels, and at hundreds of locations across the county.

A full list of summer camps can be accessed online at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/rec or www.MontgomeryParks.org/guide. Online registration for summer programs and camps is available at https://recweb.montgomerycountymd.gov/ and www.ParkPASS.org.

Below are examples of the many summer camp programs offered by Montgomery County Recreation available this year: (Check the website for dates and prices.)

• Adventure Theatre’s Musical Theatre Camp (Ages 8-12)
Create costumes, build the set, choreograph, sing, act and produce a full-scale Broadway work.

• Aqua Sports Camps (Ages 7-11)
This camp has it all – swimming, diving, trampoline, soccer, kickball, crafts and games. Offered at Germantown Indoor Swim Center, Olney Swim Center, and Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Center.

• Little People Centers (Ages 4 -5)
Games, crafts, stories, sing-alongs, water play and special themes in an environment designed for the young child.

• Mad Science (Ages 6-12)
Robots, rocketry, secret agent sleuthing, and engineering make science fun.

• Sports Camps (Ages 5-17)
Camps and programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced athletes.

• Washington Wizards & Mystics Youth Basketball Camp (Ages 8-17)
Learn proper techniques on various skills such as ball-handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense and team concepts. Instruction included from the Washington Mystics, plus special guests from current and former Wizards and Mystics teams.

• Summer Fun Centers (Ages 5 – 12 years)
This affordable program -- $350 for six weeks of full-day programming -- offers supervised recreational programming from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including arts and crafts, sports, games, music and special events.

• Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Programs (Ages 5 – 21)
Montgomery County Recreation provides TR programming to assist participants with disabilities. Whether looking to participate in a therapeutic recreation camp or requesting inclusive services, the TR team is available to help find the right fit.

• Teen Programs (Ages 13 -16)
The Summer Leadership Challenge and the Junior Counselor Program provide leadership training and job skills.

SPORTS CAMPS

• Stand-Up Paddleboard FUNdamentals Camp at Lake Needwood (Ages 12-17)
(*Participants must know how to swim.) Learn the basics of Stand-Up Paddleboarding.

• Summer Skateboard Camp at Olney Manor Skate Park (Ages 6-13)
Learn to push, ride, tack, turn olly, kick flip grind, stall, drop in and get air from professional instructors from American Inline Skating.

• Tennis and Tennis Combo Camps at Pauline Betz Addie Tennis and Wheaton Indoor Tennis (Ages 4 – 17)
All-day tennis camp and combo camps featuring a half-day of tennis instruction paired with other sports and activities such as golf, ice skating and outdoor games.

• Golf & So Much More! Camp at South Germantown Driving Range (Ages 8-13)
The 50/50 split camp gives kids time to try golf with a PGA pro in the morning, then play tennis, basketball, archery, mini-golf and other fun activities in the afternoon.

• Ice Hockey and Figure Skating at Cabin John Ice Rink and Wheaton Ice Arena (Ages 6-13)
Brush up on skating and form, and gain conditioning on the ice. Summer Fun Ice Skating Camp offers activities off the ice such as tennis, arts and crafts and outdoor games.

NATURE CAMPS

• Wild About Water Camp at Black Hill Visitor Center (Ages 9-11)
Boat, fish and explore the Chesapeake watershed from headwaters to the Bay.

• Green Thumb Garden Club Camp at Brookside Gardens (Ages 9-11)
Explore and investigate beautiful displays and natural areas. Learn about different aspects of the plants and their habitats. Plant and take home vegetable, succulent and butterfly container gardens.

• Nature Tales Camp at Brookside Nature Center (Ages 8-12)
Make puppets, build stages, research nature topics and write a script to tell nature stories. The five-day camp concludes with a grand puppet show for invited guests.

CAMPER FAVORITES

• Week in the Park at Wheaton Ice Arena (Ages 6-12)
The most popular camp includes indoor tennis and ice skating lessons, a field trip to South Germantown Splash Playground and Miniature Golf, nature walks, and miniature train and carousel rides

• Outdoor Adventure Camp at Cabin John Ice Rink (Ages 9-13)
Discover the outdoors with activities ranging from white water rafting, zip lines, rappelling, aerial obstacle and ropes courses, fishing, canoeing, go-carting and more.
